Ultrasonic cleaners ?

I have four Solex 44iP carbs that i want to clean up well and i hear that this Ultrasonic is the best way to go.

I see the cost is around £30 a carb to get them done, then i see you can buy a cleaner for £100 to £150.

I have picked a couple of random to show wnat i mean and was wondering fi they are good and do a proper job

I’m interested in knowing more about these as well. Last one I used was something the Mrs got from QVC aimed at jewellery. 95% of its effectiveness was down to the type of fluid used. Soapy water as suggested in the instructions was useless.

It's fine for my needs.
I make my own cleaning fluid from IPA, water 50/50, dollop of fairy liquid, I then use that in the water tank strength depending on how filthy the parts are

I contacted a local business about having carburettors cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner, and one of the things he told me is that it won't shift tough petrol stains. As that was most of the problem with mine, I had it vapour blasted instead.

I haven't put it back together yet, it's waiting for me to clean and plate the rest of it. Can't tell you how much it would cost, because the chap who did it had only just got the blasting equipment and did it for free to try it out.

I've done loads of carbs and this is true, also petrols salts can go rock hard and block jets and the US cleaner won't usually deal with that, so even after a real good session in the cleaner they still need going over.

I've got a 6L Velor to clean up carbs. Works fine. Better results if you pre-grease before going into the cleaner. I used proper carb cleaner, but not sure it made a real differane. Mine came with a lead which had no earth wire so I bought one with a proper earth wire for a kettle just to be on the safe side. I also made a simple soda blaster (bucket and gun connected to a small compressor - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/32454803...k0+TDWhqzeEDjTwGDf1F0x/ljMAc|tkp:BFBMjMT6x_lf) which gave a nice finish after the Ultrasonic cleaner.

doing a google search for info, i see that it will even remove paint it the setup is 30Hz or more. Has anybody found this goos with the correct solution ?

I have been told not to sand blast carburetors.

looking at basket/tank size, does the basket top sit below the solution, my carb is 150mm x 100mm and wondering if the 80mm cage will do, thats if the solution goes above the cage a little.

Vapour bead blasting bring carbs up like new and the stuff is water soluble so no danger of blocking jets. It also leaves a coating that protects the metal parts? There are many different media you can use and it does affect the finish. It can look from grit blasted to almost polished.

I have been told not to sand blast carburetors.

sand is an abrasive and leaves a matt finish. beadblasting uses glass spheres that gently peen the surface without alteration to tolerances and wont damage the surface

You need to talk to an experienced seller. I used to design the things - but that was 20 yrs ago. And I still miss access to proper industrial cleaning machines - a lot kW of ultrasonics in a big tank, with heat, pumped sparge to clear floating oils etc.

Got to low on the frequency and you will hammer the aluminium. Get the chemistry wrong, and with dissimilar metals in the carb, you could find stuff simply falling out as you erode the metals.

Go the other way, go too soft on detergent, frequency and power and do nothing to the dirt.

Or, as my mate did when I borrowed a tank from my old boss for him to use, complained it was next to useless . . . turned out he's not switched the actual ultrasonics on Once he'd done that - clean carbs to go on his Lotus Elan.

If your 30 quid is clean the carb, inside, outside, clean the jets etc, ie do a proper cleaning job, then it sounds a good price. If it's simply to hang it in a tank for 30mins and then its handed back . . maybe not.

I also can't help but think a 100/150 quid ultrasonic tank is a Toytown one.

I have an ex dental 3 litre US cleaner. Unfortunately the PO must have used it without the basket as the transducers cracked and died 3 months in to my ownership.
I bought a pair of cones and a driver off Aliexpress and rebuilt it, still going well.
I put an old Amal Concentric in one to clean it and the carb started to dissolve after it came out, whether this was the cleaner or the carn metal I do not know but it was interesting. A lot of metal paste came out of it.
Of late I have been experimenting with warm water in the US and putting items to be cleaned in whatever solution I am using in a separate container in the basket.
Recently I was cleaning rubber gaskets in a liquid with a dish washer tablet crumbled and mixed in hot water.
And doing the same with Evaporust

I bought an Ultrawave cleaner for use in my business about 25 years ago and that is still going strong. However, the price of the current equivalent model looks to be ~£700.

I've used it to clean 2 carbs recently and used Allendale carb ultrasonic cleaner additive and I'm very happy with that. mine was £500 n big enoughfor 2 weder DCOE's.....
Having the proper liquid for carbs does help but a bit expensive...think £85 for 25ltr....
Sometimes u need to give em 2 cycles to get em clean......
I did the head and crank case on my 4 cyl NSU engine....came out great.....burnt on oil stains from years of service went after a couple of goes.....
U just cant rush it....
have had a couple of disapointments tho.....carbs from strimmers...they still never ran right.....replacement was the way to go for them....
but generally works every time.
