Our house where we lived as kids was in a 7 acre disused sand pit, mostly just quite soft sandstone left by then.
It was a paradise for kids as we could dig tunnels and underground dens in the banks, and even bigger ones in pits, roofed over with planks and turf.
Some got quite cosy with fireplaces and chimneys, as the sandstone dried out it became very crumbly. We built the behind shrubs and brambles to hide them. Parents never even seemed to notice what we were doing, how we survived is still a mystery to me!
