Is that the longest back cap in the world on the ck torch.

We have just got a water cooled ck torch for the old esab at work, it's night and day better than a standard torch and worlds apart from the horrific parweld that's on our miller dynasty.

No, not had chance today, but tomorrow I shall have a play. The red hose is some sort of braided stuff, not the rubber hose I expected it to be, I assume it has the main power wire woven into it somehow.

I’m assuming the front shroud bits are a lot smaller and shorter than the big torch, so a standard length tungsten will need to stick that much further out the back end.
Which reminds me, I should have added a couple of 2.4 to this order.

Cut the tungstens, use the short back cap. The big advantage of-these for me is how light they are and how flexible the hose is.

Been out today and done some test welds on 1.6mm plate, the welds came out a fair
bit better than with the old torch, but were a lot easier to do, with far less visits to the grinding wheel.

I shall be ordering that cover for the lead, having sliced myself twice already on snipped off cable ties….

I ordered 2% thoriated red tungsten. Is that right for mild steel and stainless? None of the ‘how to’ sections here seem to tell me.

Thoriated are the radioactive ones, banned in a lot of places now. I like the Purple E3 for steels.

The tungstens that came with the welder from r-tech were actually reds and whites, 2 of each, 1.5 and 2.4.

I do so little welding I don’t think I’ll start glowing for a while yet.

I slice the "stump" off flush with a sharp blade to leave it smooth.

It occurred to me a few days ago that there’s no damper on the front suspension I’ve built. May well be an MSVA fail, so today I went out to rectify this.
Plan was to assemble the front end complete, and work out how much room I have to put an old telescopic damper in that I found in the shed.
Then it all went wrong.

All the carefully made precision fitted bushes and pins now bit me in the bum. After welding the assemblies up things had move slightly, despite being clamped solidly while welding, and nothing would line up or go together. I struggled and cursed and came close to scrapping the whole bolide, and eventually I just opened up all the clearances to rattle fit, and bored the rockers out a bit more, and it seems to go together okay now.

I didn’t have anything long enough to bore all the way through the rockers, so a 3/8” end mill was pressed into service. It worked surprisingly well, just using one corner. Needs must etc.

A mate built a L /Link system for his enduro outfit using the original forks as suspension .Really pleased with about18 inches of movement until he hit a hollow flat in top ,front wheel locked and he almost joined the GB Astronaut training team.

Suck eggs time ! Just make sure that you have a positive stop before it the tyre binds on something solid on full bump. A mate built a L /Link system for his enduro outfit using the original forks as suspension .Really pleased with about18 inches of movement until he hit a hollow flat in top ,front wheel locked and he almost joined the GB Astronaut training team.

I don’t think there will be a lot of wheel travel, the spring is real stiff. But I shall leave plenty of room, we all know what state the roads are in.

I worked out a solution to the damper mount and welded a gusset in that will both stiffen the front fork legs and provide a mounting place. I cracked out the tig again, I’m trying to use it every time I weld anything now, it’s such a clean, neat, tidy way to weld, with no spatter or mess to clean up. I’m getting a bit better at it too, slowly but shirley.

It looks like it got a bit too hot, but I’d already welded the other side so it just added to the heat. The other side had a nice steady ‘rainbow’ along half the tube. And I didn’t have to re grind the tungsten even once.
I do need to get some better reading glasses with a closer focal length though, I find it hard to see properly sometimes.

I ordered a 1.75 cheater lens, it arrived today. I’m not sure what I was expecting but I can hardly see any magnification in it, maybe a 10% increase in size at best. Plus looking through two layers, it’s of no improvement at all.
