V8 trike build.

I spent a few hours bead rolling the cooling pipes, and fitting up the cooling system, rubber etc, as it will live from now on, hopefully no major glaring errors will appear as the next part of the puzzle gets added on.

I shall wrap some 1/8” rubber strip around the pipes where they pass through the alloy supply rackets.

This is all getting rather exciting, that light at the end of the tunnel is no longer the oncoming train!

The trike is in the assembly shop, basically the front garage. I had a tidy up because I knew I’d have to be rolling around on the floor for hours getting the pipework fitted.

The workshop proper is a pig sty now, because ‘someone’ dumped all the crap out of the assembly shop in there……

Browsing the web for a suitable headers tank for the cooling system I was looking at £150 ally tanks from kit car purveyors, but then I saw some interesting stuff on eBay. Okay, it’s Chinesium, but for £35 it can’t be too disappointing. So one is on order now.

It’s 2.5 litre, which should be ample. I’m not sure whether the connections on the tank are what I need though, now I look at it again….

It says it’s a universal coolant expansion tank, but as long as it’s leakproof and does the job I doubt it makes any difference really.

The exact same pic would probably pop up were I to look for an oil catch tank….

I have a shorter one of those as a header tank, expect very loose fitting threads and lots of ptfe tape use. Apart from that works just fine..

For the price it’s worth a go. I made my own expansion tank on my last hot rod, out of an aluminium water bottle. It wasn’t quite big enough, for the 3.0 Essex motor and would over flow when the temp got right up, then empty and suck air in when it cooled. I have an idea it needed to be mounted higher though, or the air would be trapped in the motor.

Header tank, the pipe will go to the bottom, so any water that comes from the engine gets sucked back in as it cools again.

But it's normally an in and out for an expansion tank with a void at the top for expansion, where as an overflow sucks it back in from the radiator cap

This will be fed from both rad cap feeds, one on the motor, one on the rad out back, the two high points in the system. Water and bubbles will work their way into the tank, and hopefully only water sucked back into the engine. The header tank top won’t be sealed, or pressurised.

This is on the top front of the motor. I’ll add a spigot then a hose all the way to the back, where the header tank will live, cunningly attached to the (not yet made) pillion back rest, so it is nice and high.

Ah, right, the usual set up depends on suction too put the coolant back in, but that should work fine
