My MECCANO set had pulley wheels and winders a bit like a starting handle,if you can find some.

Or even make, given the talents on here.

Just talking to a bloke in UK about a differential winch to haul up his steel centre plate on the boat. Basicly, the ss cable is wound round a 25mm tube that has a much bigger pulley on the end with a rope to haul. Gives about 8:1.

Can't believe no one's suggested adapting a MIG welder wire feed assembly, you'll have posh variable speed to impress small children too.

1. You don't find them at the auto recycling yard
2. The window motors are flat to be extra skinny (might fit where sash weights used to be)
