Very familiar tales, up above. Substitute "welder" or "cut50" for "winch" and we've been over this ground many time.

Sure, a Chinese import likely won't have the same build quality as known brands but if it works out of the box then you're halfway there.

For what it's worth, a truck forum I was on did a group buy / import of no-name Chinese copy winches and we bought around 20 if I recall correctly. All were absolutely fine and put in several years of good work.
Two additional hints:
1. From memory, I don't think anyone uprated batteries and nobody reported an issue (these were L200s)
2. Having a very strong and properly designed winch bumper / tray / frame is essential - don't cheap out on that part

It's more of a lottery but at half price, and from a reputable supplier (including Amazon), I'd suggest it was wort a punt.

If any serious use is involved a second battery is a must because if you stall your truck your likely not to have enough juice to start, guess how I learnt that lesson.

I just fitted a truck battery twice the size as standard.

I always ran a second battery and split charge system for my winch and auxiliary lighting for that reason, even managed to jump start myself when the main battery died

Is the motor really drawing that current or is it the gearing making it a 6.5hp output?

You don't get more power out than you put in, so yes the 5kW motor is drawing that. Mind you, that's at a nominal 12V, so at full system voltage it will be a touch less, but even so it's a brute.

Thanks, for the winch mount I was thinking of this as I don't want a big steel bumper on the front.

Fortunately my LC has the winter pack so has dual batteries already. I'm thinking of adding a leisure battery and split charge system to run and auxiliary devices

I may be wrong here but leisure batteries like low draw over a long period. They don’t like fast high draw like cranking. Or a winch.

Yes, I won't run a winch off the leisure battery but it's handy if you need to jump start and you have nothing else.

The leisure one would run an led light and a fridge etc for any overlanding trips I'd be doing

The not using using it much is a winch killer, they do need running up from time to time.

I'm starting to think about fitting a winch to my Landcruiser, not that I'm likely to need it for the off roading I do but it's best to have it rather than not have one when needed.

When getting stuck off road, usually you would want to pull the vehicle backwards out of a sticky situation, and not further forward into it; so consider welding up a custom quick release mount that can be attached to either the front or rear of your vehicle.

As an example, here is a photo of how it can be done with using 2"x 2" square tube with a compatible receiver socket. The winch is held in by a removable pin. This connection method is also the way most trailer hitch mounts are fabricated in America. The receiver socket type mount is versatile, as it can be used to mount a step plate, bicycle rack, vice, or even a luggage carrier.

Don’t forget to inform your insurance company - or an unfortunate claim may well be denied. Crumple zones and all that.

vevor doesn´t inspire me trust ! --i was looking at some mini lathe from them but i read the reviews and didn´t order. As reviews goes the after sales isn´t there ( no big change from china) but the resell ,if we can trust reviews, some discarted lathe .

Well I went and got one.
Have gone up a little bit in price but got it for £290 with synthetic rope and wireless remote etc.

Will be making my own winch tray though as want it a bit different to the normal ones.

We recently fitted one identical to that onto a boat seems to be working okay so far
Obviously the salt water will kill the cable and probably the winch in due course

As Bob said it needs to be used every few weeks, keep it well greased and oiled.
Ideally you need two batteries and a split charge system 800-1000CCA.
Personally if its cheap one you are after buy used but you must see it working under load.
Comeup are the best value as they have a full uk spares place for backup.
Not heard any bad about winchmax either.
If you do buy a cheap one pay on a credit card so you have some protection.
I used to have Ebay sellers undercutting me then shutting up shop once they started to fail, only to open up the following week with another brand.
Winches in general are only rated for occasional use unless you go to Hydraulic, but that's very expensive.

Seen a few using Chinese winches, they seem to be ok for what they are. I’ve got a monstrous superwinch hydraulic on my Landy, it’s a bit obscene and more than capable of causing real damage, but it’s more a case of what I had than what I need

We’ve winches on the back of our pickups. I oil the wire rope, twice a year or so, makes pulling the rope off much easier. When it’s not in use it is covered over, I do think this helps keep them in a better working condition. Not had one of these winches fail on me yet.
