VFD wiring assistance

My vfd is wired to my bridgeport head and that was fine, the motor runs ok, but of course me being me i forgot on a bridgeport the motor needs to run in both directions, depending on which speed range you are using.

I thought it was a simple matter of running another wire from the control wire area on the vfd to the switch and bobs your uncle.

Tried that and nothing happened, the motor ran in one direction as it always had, but would not run in the other.

The switch is a three position NO one that is original to the machine (Tom Senior). In the middle position it is off and if you turn it left or right it should run the motor in forward or reverse.

I have included pictures of the manual, if anyone can tell me what to do it would be a great help.

Wire a swith up to the rev.connection When it is high it goes the opposite direction

Also check that reverse is not disabled in the parameters (should not be by default)

I did try to wire up the switch, didn't work. As for the parameters, its a pretty basic vfd, but a good brand, ABB. Stumped.

You need start and rev to make it go the opposite way not just rev. Also check the 0arams. There will be a one to stop rev. You will need the destructions as parrams are usually just numbered

Also check the mode it's running in. This could disable the rev.

Not sure if this is correct but to me looks like both start (6) and rev(7) both need 12v together for the motor to run in reverse

Take the 12 v out of the inverter 12 /24v connector block and run it to a 3 way or 2 way toggle switch.
12 v goes to the central contact (tag 5)
Take a wire from each of the other contacts and connect one to start (tag 6 on) and the other to reverse (tag 7)
If its a double pole switch just use one side.

If the switch is in the center position nothing happens (If 3 way switch used)
Switch one way motor should run in one direction.
Switch other way motor should run the opposite direction.
Change the wires to make it run the way you want.
As said before, this assumes the reverse hasn't be disabled in the menus

You could use the switch on the Bridgeport if you want to keep an original look, you would need to change the wiring on the Bridgeport slightly.

Right, i tried everything about 10 times, and nothing works. i can only get the spindle to turn one way. I have attached a photo of the switch, i am stumped.

Hi Seadog, its an ABB ACS50. Its fairly basic, but when i bought it i was all i needed to get my machine going. You can see them in the bottom picture, top switch, on the left hand side. Do you think the vfd needs power to both start and rev at the same time ?

No, the red wire is from the +12v to the switch, with a jumper to the other side of the switch.

From the manual it does look a lot less complicated than the one I have. Seems the options are set with dip switches and a pot, none of which seem the inhibit reverse

Have you a multi meter to check the wiring and the switch?
I'm assuming it's wired with one switch normally open and the other normally closed.
It would be worthwhile checking what you have from the 12v to the run and reverse tags.
As Carbon suggests running a wire will confirm if the Vfd is working correctly
