Vibratory tub

Just started to put together this thing to clean and deburr CDS tubing.
I sometimes need to tig weld some components out of CDS tubing and it's always covered in oil inside and out and has burrs from where the ends are notched. I usually end up spending a couple of hours cleaning as there can be up to 70 bits to sort out.

The plan is to use ceramic media to clean and deburr....i thought about using a drum a bit like a cement mixer but on having a look around the net found these tubs...i used to work a fair bit on large aggregate screens which are pretty much the same so thought i'd give it a go.

The underneath has an outlet for liquid...the motor base was for a small vibrator that was no good so has now been choped off.

The tub is 10" tall at the front 12" at the back and 20" wide. 12" from front to back. It should hold around 1.5 cuft.

Some more pics of the vibrating bit.

The original vibrator didn't have enough go in it so i made a few eccentric weights to go on a 25mm shaft.

The weights have grubscrews to hold them in position but could be turned relative to each other to decrease the amount of vibration.

They are also threaded to be able to add more weight if it's needed.

The shaft was machined for a keyway on the end to add the drive pulley which will be fixed with a taperlock.

The motor mount for a 1hp single phase 1400rpm motor....i might need to alter the speed up to 1700-2000 which i can do with the taperlock pulleys.

A bit of a hiccup the weights interfered with the motor by about 2 inches

Cutting up the base this morning to add another 6" to the height to get the weights to clear the motor.

These last two pics are as far as it has got.

It now needs pulleys and belt and a bit of wiring.

I also have a bit of conveyor belt to line the inside to cut down on wear and noise.

I might have to change springs once i test it but they were only £2 a go so not too bad.

The rotating off centre weights will cause the spring mounted tub to vibrate forwards and backwards and up and down a bit.

With a bit of fine tuning this should hopefuly make the ceramic media inside the tub move in a circular motion inside the tub.

When the bits of metal that need cleaning/deburring are put in they will circulate with the media.

The ceramic media rubs against the steel and cleans it and removes sharp edges over an hour or two i hope.

Very nice build Wyn. Reminds me of working at Petter Diesels, they used to debur the aluminium crankcases with a similar machine and it left a lovely finish.

The weights fixed to the bottom...there is a block welded either side of the bearing to stop them wandering around.

The inside with a drain hole to remove any cleaning water that might get added.

The spring mountings are looking a bit iffy and i don't think they will last long...they are just a bit of flat bar with a threaded hole.

I think i might ditch the springs and try some rubber mountings for starters.

The springs and mountings didn't go too well so got a few rubber mounts to try.

They turned out to be too flexible even with the springs around the outside.

So i got some more solid rubber mounts and put the springs on the outside.

The mountings seem to work and it runs ok.

Today i stuck some conveyor belting on the inside to stop the steel wearing and cut down on noise.

great job so far wyn, should work well with ceramic media in it.
sure better way to clean and deburr stuff then by hand.

look forward to more pics and seeing it finnished and working.

Had some ceramic turn up today so chucked it in to see what would happen.

They are supposed to run at 2/3 full...i bought 25kg of the stuff and it seems to be ok.

This is what it looks like....about 20mm at it's widest and 8mm thick.

When it was running i had problems with it "lodging" inside the 1 1/4" CDS tubing.

I might have to get some smaller "rounder" ceramic to see if it will work better.

Emptying it out through the door...it comes out nicely when it's running.

It all fitted nicely into a 25L drum...i need to cut the top a bit to get it to flow into the drum when it needs to be removed.

Here's a vid of the first go....it's actually running backwards so i changed the motor wiring after this vid....It was strange as the weights run in the opposite direction to the way the ceramic flows

There is plenty of dust so the next job is to rig up a watering system...I also had a pond pump arrive today to do this.

It needs bolting down where i'm going to use it as it moves about a bit clamped to the bench making it a bit noiseier than it should have been.


I need to sort out some guards as well now it's running ok so i don't accidentaly chop my hands off with the weights.

Nice one. I built a vibrating sieve for my blasting media, it's fascinating watching the grit roll around as it moves down the slope into the bin.

Some anti-vibration mounts like they use for air compressors should make good mountings.

Looks like its running the stones round just like the real thing. I seem to recall they have a spray bar across the top for the water, the ones that a former place of employment had were all piped up together, and a centrifuge thing for separating the sludge from the water and recirculating it.


Rumble and oil dip was always my favorite finish while working there, nice and easy for batch components.
Only bad bit was the noise of 3 big rumblers and 2 tumblers constantly running at the same time.

I was thinking of using a total loss sort of system with the water .....as you say it will produce a lot of sludge that i don't really want to get into filtering.

do you plan to put a lid on it, if you do you would only need a small amount of liquid in there to stop the dust and would end up a sludge
