Vintage Croydon Pillar Drill Motor problem

I tested the resistance and it was the same between all connections! So I wired it up as shown (temporarily) and it works REALLY well - very quiet, smooth and powerful - not at all like my mid range modern drill. It doesn't like it when the belt is to tight on the slowest speed, but it's adjustable. I am VERY pleased with my beautifully made pillar drill (not bad for £25!), thank you for your excellent advice.

Beautiful looking tool that!
The "earth" on the cap doesn't need to be there, it's only a mounting bolt.
