Yes it was new. Contacts showed no signs of being moved to any degree and no signs of any connections to the tabs. The plastic moulding does look fairly crude but serviceable. No attempt at bearings for the shaft, just a square shaft loosely rotating in a round hole in the end plates.
The single contact is interesting in that it's inner end is jammed between a pair of springyish plates (the flying saucer looking jobbies in the pics). These are riveted through the plastic to a moving contact on t'other side which selects each of the eight stations. The rivets are steel 'nails'. Probably not recommended but will do the job I guess.
I suspect that if this was a switch being used regularly day in, day out it would probably not last long. On a welder where a few adjustments to voltage are made every now and then it should hold up for a while.
Certainly in comparison to the Awelco I was hoping to use it is poor but I didn't expect too much for the money so am not disappointed- or at least if it had arrived in one piece I wouldn't be!
