Wall papering/ old unused flue

Made some progress stripping the old stuff off. There is an old paper/lining on top of the bare wall/plaster and that came away from the wall easier than the wall paper from the lining.

Should I strip it all back to the wall/should I use a lining paper before the wall paper? Or new paper just over it as, it is now?

We also had an old gas fire/flue. It was boarded up years ago, I note theres no vent holes, so could be full of moisture, Im tempted to check and try to do a better job - we used to have an electric heater covering it since.

if you had any water it would show lower down so thats fine

wall paper strip it all off

either pull those plugs out of the wall or chop them below the surface so when you fill them they wont show up as bad

wall looks fine so wont need to do an overcoat of thin plaster

Yes I will remove and fill plugs. Theres some cracking in plaster above the flue, I guess filler is adequate to hide it.

Should I do anything to help new paper stick on the wall? I was thinking a brush of SBR, as I still have plenty.

if anything the wall around the hole wants a sanding down

the cracks are just normal fill ups

sbr not really needed and your not dealing with an old wall that sucks the moisture out of the wallpaper paste where you would need to coat with a water based wallpaper paste

up to you if you line or not as its your choice

That's how it used to be done, modern papers don't usually need lining.

Just size the wall with paste ….
Line if it’s a bit rough, helps hide the irregularities

Quickest way to get rid of the plugs is just drill them down half an inch below the surface - avoids a large chunk of plaster coming off the wall. Lining paper "should" be hung horizontally to avoid visible bumps - it serves two purposes, firstly to help smooth out any irregularities in the plaster and also helps when hanging very thin paper - especially on fresh plaster which can suck the glue off the back of the paper, even when already sized.

It all depends on the kind of paper your hanging, a thing pattern youll see every fault when you put the lights on, a thick blown vynl you wont.

Id skim that once paper is off!

Yes ,strip all old paper off the wall. Glue size the wall prior to papering. Lining paper is normally recommended when using expensive paper. I do paper without it though. If you are lining ......it goes across the wall [ cross lining] ...not vertical.
After removing the paper ,leave to dry . Sand the wall then apply the glue size [ just a thinned down wallpaper paste] when dry , sand again to get rid of any 'nibs' ie hardened paste etc. Then your ready to start papering. Read the labeling and remember that important 'soak time' before hanging. Of course some papers are ready to hang straight away.

....thats what the bloke who owned my house seemed to think....the stuff was everywhere!

Better than one house I looked at which had Fan style artex on every surface!!

Woodchip is blooming awful stuff...when you try to pull it off the walls the chips are often left behind....then of course theres the excitement of discovering what they were trying to hide in the first place...who knew wood chip is a structural repair material!!!

After the wood chip experience all wall paper is now banned in our house....the whole house required plastering....every wall....every ceiling!

Yes, woodchip is a nightmare.........for me too and I'm a decorator. But remember, it was popular in the 70's. It covered a lot of problems with wall surfaces. Now we have blown vinyl to do that. Rather like artex. Everyone went wild for that fad. On ceilings and walls. Nightmare to remove . You have to get the surfaces skimmed.

Had a look at the flue, wasnt happy with the way it was blocked off being concave hardboard and a terrible half attempt at filler, without enough gap for me to flatten nicely.

Plan to put an off cut of plasterboard and skim it flat with the wall.

My dad was under the impression there were vent holes in the hardboard to prevent moisture. None. This used to have a storage heater infront but that has been removed 2019, likely to have a book shelf/cabinet infront when this is done. Does it need a vent?
Should I block up, or insulate the cavity? I have spare rockwool.

Should there be holes/vent? I believe the flue is still going to the roof unchanged.
