Not convinced about using sound waves - It shattered glass by sonics but only bottles and jars, once broken you have to resort to mechanical crushing. I guess they rattle the bottle about until it shatters under its own resonant frequency.

Any pics of it, or is it a well guarded secret?
Wouldn't surprise me. Amazing how some things start vibrating merrily once you find their resonant frequency. Used to have a devil of a time with certain things when I connected audio sig gens to the amplifier for basic testing.

I take it this crushing machine is what I vaguely recall seeing a reference from yourself to anyone dropping by bringing empty bottles/jars with them was, a few weeks ago? I can start stashing some for when I finally get off my **** and call round if so.

We got royally reamed by the Env Agency a few years back; we had several Cobalt-60 isotopes that were used for site radiography. Originally 'cut' back in the 70s, they had decayed to about a tenth of their new energy but were still well within useable limits. Unfortunately the US makers of the transport/ storage containers they were in had since ceased trading. Under IAEA regs. there has to be a responsible party (usually the manufacturer) for any transport container who certifies it as fit for purpose. With the original maker gone and nobody else willing to take these devices on, once their transport certs. expired they could no longer be used to move the isotopes about the country (even though, as I said, the isotopes themselves were perfectly useable and would be so for decades to come).
As we do no industrial radiography (they were hire units but nobody had wanted to hire them for years) and anyway our premises weren't suitable for such, plus we couldn't take them off the premises without a transport cert., EA saw them as waste material and insisted we disposed of them PDQ through an approved channel. PDQ meant within 8 weeks; there were only two companies able and/or willing to take the job on and in the end we had to shell out £61,000 in waste disposal charges (for four isotopes).
Then - get this - as we no longer had the isotopes on our register, we had to pay, surprise surprise, the Env Agency to amend our Radioactives licence to show that we no longer had them!
A riffle through the company records showed that they'd paid about ten grand for the isotopes in 1994 and licencing/ other official charges came to three grand over the years. Total hire costs amounted to about eleven grand. So they were £63,000 out of pocket by the time we finally got rid.
Now we have one isotope (Caesium-137) that we use for calibrating radiation monitors: licencing and other charges have gone up so much in the last five years that we only just cover the costs of the licence, and we do a lot of monitors...

I was the RPS..radiological protection superviser for the source store at my place of work, we had 36 various source jigs for training purposes and the regs/paperwork was mind boggling.
Daily accountacy checks, code of practice training and approval for all source handlers, yearly calibration check, activity leak tests..the list goes on and on.
One day whilst running a basic classified persons course, I was discussing the radioactivity of luminous paintused in old wrist watches and some other products, a course candidate mentioned he had a dial from a WW2 bomber at home.
He brought it in the next day and its activity level was higher than most of my registered sources, he mentioned there was a guy he knew who was a plane fanatic and had replicated a bomber cockpit in his shed with about 12 various dials from the period, with another 20 or 30 under the bench in a box, sitting in front of them playing bomber pilot probably.
A bit scary when you consider the reams of paperwork I had to produce to dispose of one weak radioactive source, yet these dials are sold on flea markets to collectors of war/plane memorabilia.

heres some info on the radium dial company . the building was well contaminated when they shoveled it under the carpet ERRR I MEAN away

I was talking to a regular tatter who has a waste licence. He said it was £154 and valid for 3 years, That means cost is less than £1 per week. It's also an allowable business expense.

You definitely know how to instill confidence in people about standing near to something.
Do you just want clear glass, or is any colour okay? Do labels need removing, or do they get weeded out by the crusher?Is that the same licence that rag and bone men and such have then? Covers all the general situations one might need if collecting what's technically classed as general waste?

You definitely know how to instill confidence in people about standing near to something.
Any colour is fine, it all ends up as grit. Labels get pulverised and end up floating on top of the grit in the screening machine.
I pass metal jar lids and fancy bottles onto a friend who makes lanterns out of them and Grolsch type bottles on to a Freecycler who fills them with homebrew.
Jars that have had sauces in are best rinsed out, if not it doesn't matter I just leave them in a tub of water for a while.

AFAIK it's the same one.
Remember "waste disposal" is different to "waste carrier" so it's not 100% black and white as rag and bonemen should also have the appropriate licences covering things like fridges and such that disposal is regulated.

WCL is around £60Per year, It varys slightly bettween difrent Local Athoritys, Its a formality and just about anyone can get one, believe it or not you would find most Romany's will have one.
Transfer Waste License, Now thats something completely different, If your sorting, processing materials on site, you are then subject to a become a waste transfer station, the levels of compliance vary with the products being processed on site, but the license will cover you for a maximum total tonnage of waste allowed to be processed, (which will need to be done on a certified bridge) along with over specifics such as bun-ding, dust prevention, hazz waste procedures. the list goes on, one person on the site will also need to have passed an exam to oversee the running of the site.
