water in the receiver

Hi people ive just bought a s/hand 150ltr hpc compressor,when we were moving it i noticed that there was water slopping about in the receiver ,to get it out i can either unbolt the pump and tip it upside down or drill and tap the bottom of the tank to put a drain off on it. I cant understand why there is so much water in it though(sounds like a couple of pints !!) if this is a normal thing the manufactures would of designed a drain off surely.

There should be a drain on it, can't believer they left it out. There should aready be a fitting on the bottom.

I've seen a couple of Broomwade tanks with no drain plug.

Is it fitted with a tube going from a tap on the top of the tank to the bottom?

just had another look to make sure i havent missed it and there is definetly no plug and no pipe, its just a tank with the pump and the rest of the gubbins bolted on the top,so i cant see a problem then if other tanks come as standard with some sort of drain off taped into the receiver. thanks for your replys

Could be the outlet pipe dips down and you need a good external water trap?

I would drill a 1/2" hole through and weld on half a 1/4 bsp pipe socket and fit a drain tap as you will want to drain the water occasionally.

i was thinking 1/2 inch bsp fitting drilled then taped into the underside of the receiver into 15mm copper with a gate/ball valve. how does that sound?

So i can get some distance from the compressor to the end of the line ive sited the compressor the otherside of my garden so i will have a pipe run of approx 7mtrs,along this run i will have the fall and filters and water outlets that has been explained on this forum.what would be the prefered pipe to use 15mm copper pipe or rubber air line hose, i was thinking that the copper pipe would make more condensation/water in the line as its outside.

Why unbolt the pump, surely there's an airline take off you can remove in one end or the other.

If you tap into the receiver and fit a male thread you will have a ridge inside (the end of the fitting)which will hold water, also the receiver wall will probably be too thin to support a threaded fitting, you got to weld externally.

I tap a fitting, fit it and then drill a hole in the sides about where it clears the insides of the tank.

Finally, silver solder it in. Don't use lead solder as it is weaker and the lead will oxidize.

Sorry can't see your picture but usually a press reg has a water filter and drain tap. Don't think there is any difference where condensation is concerned in what material you use as pipe, mine is plastic.
My way of thinking is the water is originally drawn in the compressor air intake as moisture.

thanks for all the feedback guys, tomorrow ill drill the receiver and depending how thick it is will determine if it gets welded or silver soldered,didnt think about the fitting going in the receiver and causing a trap so ill slot the fitting to get round this.

Dave are there no inspection plugs anywhere on the tank? it is possible to form a dip tube and use the pressure to push the water out...

my old atlas copco had the bleed near to the top of the reciever and worked as above

I finally got round to siting the compressor and running a 40amp power supply to my shed, i got the compressor running yesterday and on the top of the compressor is a brass tap when i open this it discharges the air with alot of water in it is this what ive missed !! if i open the air outlet tap obviously it discharges the air but without half as much water in it, what do you think,the way i see it is this compressor has been standing about for quite a while before i bought it and if the previous owner didnt discharge the tank occasionally this would account for all the water building up in the receiver.

i had a comp the same
the brass tap is conected to a pickup pipe at the bottom of tank. so pressurise the tank open the tap out comes water

the best i ever saw was a comp at a dental lab .it was going on and off every 1 minute with a loose knacked belt . i put a new belt on for them and asked do u drain it often .drain what was the answer it had a 5 gallon reciever and i drained 4 gallon of water from it is that takin the p ,,.,.s or what
