Wd 40

I have been Lurking on the forum for sometime now picking up the knowledge I think I will need to help with painting my car. And would like to thank everyone on the forum for all the great advice on knowledge being passed on.

I am getting to a point now where I will be very shortly laying down the first coat of epoxy primer (jotamastic) prior to filling flatting and more primer on top.

My worry is reading some of the posts re silicone sprays and WD40 etc I have used gallons of the stuff while stripping the car down. So just wondering what is the best way to nuetralise it to prevent paint problems.

panel wipe and clean cloths...wipe with a wet cloth and dry straight away , dont let it dry

repeat with new cloths and so on

As Steveo said. My recent ref to wd is the fact that the mist hangs in the air for so long and tharefore can land on a surface even after pre paint wipe/tack. Its also very good practice to fully damp down before painting.

Just so you know for the future Gibbs penetrent does the same job and doesn't cause any paint problems

there was a thread on here a long time ago (well i think it was on here) regarding wd40 and silicone reaction and someone had contacted the makers of wd40 and although they wouldnt say what was in wd40 they did say that it didnt contain silicone

Don't agree. That is a real penetrating oil, WD40 is just a Water Dispersant. So your suggestion scores on both points!

WD40 certainly IS a lubricant. It's just that there's far better lubricants out there for whatever purpose but to say it isn't one just isn't true.

It does seem fashionable to knock the stuff and I guess it's because it's so damn popular. I use it for all manner of things - degreasing, cleaning, LUBRICATING, drilling & machining etc. I've several other similar products too.

It's hard to fault it or it's multiplicity of uses.

well it lit up when i switched it but it was an old 1930s fan switch had to blow it out quick as it was setting fire to the wd40 impregnated dust

A lot of the guys use Gibbs to protect bare metal cars and once cleaned off I've not known anyone that has had paint problems, All i can say is its worked for me.

So the manufacturer's website suggests it is a cure for all known ills? What a surprise. They, Like Microsoft, appear to have superb marketing skills, which cause the user to believe that poor performance has to be the end user's fault.

Not denying that it has some (poor) lubricant properties. However, it (in my opinion) does nothing well apart from lightening the wallet. Just like Hammerite, there are far better products nowadays, designed for the purpose.

That's one product which is truly close to getting onto my despised list of late. The stuff seems to become worse year on year.
