Still classifies as a tad expensive then. One thing I did usually find it awfully useful for, (I don't actually use it anymore though, preferring to use alternative, specific methods/products these days), was for cleaning things up which had a slight rust/grime coating. It was always good for that, combined with a scrubbing or wire brush.

i use it for cleaning light rust of tools and machinery using it on a scotch pad as well

I pay £16 a gallon, use probably 3 a year so less than a quid a week. Jack of all trades, master of none is a pretty good description. Mostly I use it for cleaning small bike parts, cleaning tools, cleaning my lathe, as lube for emery paper and machining aluminium. For those jobs it's great.

I once read somewhere "the W stands for Water, the D for Dispersant and the 40 is the IQ of anyone who thinks it's a lubricant."

It is handy to have a tin around for cleaning crap off stuff though.

I use WD40 because I've got 3 tins left from years ago when I got it free. I've got some other stuff called Kennedy and some Duck Oil and they all seem to work fine. Duck oil actually says it cleans electrical contacts.

WD40 is handy because it's OK at all those tasks, but as said above, not excellent at any of them. So it's convenient to have one can rattling around in the boot of your car where it can be used to add a bit of lubrication to squeaking doors, free up a stuck bonnet catch, and drive out water from HT leads. Same in the garage - if you need to flush muck from a thread, it does the job, and leaves it lubricated a bit so it's easier to screwn the bolt in.

But if I need something that's stuck (eg a sunroof) to be properly lubricated, I'll maybe use WD40 to get it moving, then rinse it out and use a proper grease.

Kind of like sellotape. It'll hold things together, but not as well as a properly applied adhesive. It'll insulate things electrically, but not as well as even insulating tape. And I'm sure people have numerous other uses for it.

There are times when a 'jack of all trades. master of none' is appropriate....

as does anything that contaminates the paint, even the rambo looking fly that drags its self along

That's one product which is truly close to getting onto my despised list of late. The stuff seems to become worse year on year.

I agree with this comment, 40 odd years ago I bought some to paint the sills of my car. When some time later I needed to remove it(the Hammerite), I ended up using an angle grinder with a soft disc. Nitromors wouldn't touch it, nor anything else I could find, but recently I've noticed how gutless it has become. I guess that's the price of H&S regulations! Have you also noticed how bad green Swarfega is now, the orange one with granules in is much better, thats progress for you.

I haven't bought swarfega for 10 years or more, it's been shockingly bad, I just buy a big 15lt tub of HD citrus from bilt hamber instead, miles cheaper, works better, lasts me all year!

just sprayed a 1 gallon can that i coated with wd40 . wiped it clean with a dry cloth and give it a coat of paint no reaction whatsoever im not sugesting trying it on a respray though i dont chance fate
