Hi tattie bogle thanks for the interest, all the parts for the weathervane are finished as far as the fabrication is concerned, but it got a bit too cold to paint them in January / February so they are sat in the spare room inside the house awaiting paint. I am currently extending my single garage by adding a 10 foot x 10 foot shed to the rear and knocking through to form a workshop as I was fed up with having very little useable space to work in. Once that's ready the weathervane will be completed and fitted and I will post some photos of the finished item.

Realy nice. Like the vice too. For pivots: I usually spin the support shaft on the grinder to get a point. Then use a little bit of phosfor bronze rod in the top of the tube that supports the twirly bit. Slight countersink in the bronze to take the point. Important bit is to balance the top part with some weight on the windward end, so it is neutral on the pivot. When ready, I put it flat on a sharp edge under the pivot tube, with the 'downwind' end on a good kitchen scale. Then work out the weight to put on the 'upwind' end to balance it. Better you get this, the better it responds to light winds.

Hi Guys, quick update on this, having a nice sunny afternoon and needing to get some more timber to carry on with the workshop build I decided to start getting some paint on the various components with a view to getting this finished.
This is the pointer now welded to a 75mm diameter solid steel ball hollowed out to a point internally thanks to Roofman, and welded to some hollow tube which is a nice fit witha couple of mm clearance over the main support rod. sitting in the conservatory waiting for the first coat to dry.
These are the main support and the direction arrows freshly painted with their first coat.
and finally this is the workshop build so far, still lots to do but getting there. internal and external views. You'll have to forgive the chaotic appearance but I am having to work around everything having dismantled my workbench and storage shelving in order to break through and join up the two areas. I appreciate its only a timber building but wanted to try and make it in keeping as it's within the garden and it's all the budget would allow.

I have made a couple in the past and for a reduced friction pivot Put some grease into the tubular socket then drop in a ball bearing or two that have a bit of clearance in the tube,then the support rod just needs to be flat ended, Really easy method and free movement too.

good looking shed , also i have started a weathervane too do you need to earth it i have googled that query and got conflicting answers i get the feeling i wont need too but the proposed position is near the telephone cable running to the house is that a problem ?

Hi no worries on the hi jack, the more input the better as there was very little information about making these that I could find when I started out on this, so it's all helpful to anyone else contemplating making one. As to earthing it I think I am ok as mine is going on another timber shed within the garden with a tall tree nearby so I don't think it will be a problem and I presume if your putting yours on the house if your tv aerial is higher than your proposed weathervane then that would more likely be hit in the case of a lightning strike. Good question though and maybe one of the sparkies might be able to advise better

i realy wouldnt worry about earthing it . u would need a 100mm cable down to a good earth rod to carry the lightning current.ive seen lightning blow a 6 foot hole in the side of a brick gable end of a house burn all the wiring and trash every apliance in the house it even blew the plaster off the walls where the cables were buried and explodedgood looking shed , also i have started a weathervane too do you need to earth it i have googled that query and got conflicting answers i get the feeling i wont need too but the proposed position is near the telephone cable running to the house is that a problem ?

Been crackin on with the workshop, starting to fit it out now and planning were things are going to go, having gotten by with just 2 metres of worktop to work on in the past I am feeling rather spoilt.

most of the framework is in now and I am just trying to source a couple of cupboards to add under the benches on one side and I can fit the tops and start tidying it up, square of the brickwork etc, sorry there is no welding yet as I can't even get at the welder at the moment never mind use it, the wraparound bench into the garage will be fitted with a steel top and that will become the welding area.

At last it's finished, It's only taken me about 5 monthsbut then you can't rush these precision engineering projects
fitted it this afternoon, used a compass to set it right and it spins lovely. The letters are set so when it's viewed from the house they read correctly.
I have to say I'm delighted, learnt a lot on the way and a fitting memorial to my dog.

Looks great but you have got the letters back to front.

But I did once have a potential customer wanting a sign with cutout letters that would read the same from either side. I spent ages trying to explain the basic impossibility of this. Gave up in the end. It beggars belief.

Norm, It looks absolutely great, I love your work. As I work in calibration of weather stations, I was wondering if you have set the north pointer to magnet North or True North. It should be set to True North. Therefore you need to know the magnetic declination for your area and then add it to the compass magnetic reading to get the direction of true North.
So as a little example, if you were in Blackpool, the magnetic declination is negative 2deg 58min or close enough to -3 deg.
Therefore using your compass you need to align the northern pointer by looking behind it to a reading of 3 deg. I know it's not much but just a little bit of info.
I.E.
Compass direction + magnetic declination = True reading.
3 deg (Compass) + (-3 deg) = 0 Deg True north.

Hope so too Chunko, had eight marvellous years with her, I got her from a rescue home, she had been found left for dead at the side of a road, she was pretty badly smashed up, broken ribs and her leg broken in two places. She was held together by some fantastic surgery all stainless pins, nuts, bolts, etc and an external skeleton frame, took me 18 months to get her right and damn near bankrupt me, but worth every penny. Despite what she had been through she had a beautiful temperament and was a brilliant companion.
