I'd agree with @Pete. never welded one to extend it, but used an old one to form a "batterer", a box section tool to fit over and drive in earth spikes etc, there's a photo on here somewhere.
No drama, welded fine, and the abuse it's had over the years it's been fine, but that was the drive end on to a flat plate / box section, so had plenty of metal to join. Worked fine. Didn't think the steel used was anything special to be honest.
worst you can do is try it, if it welds ok, give it a go, take it easy the first few goes, see how it stands up. if it doesn't, buy one... i'd give it ago though, nothing to lose
