A great deal 95% of the time, I may travel over to the mainland again, I'll see how this goes, there's a lot of work going on in kilroot power station,
the ship yard has got a few big contracts, to give you an idea of rates the yard was paying under £15 an hour for Coded welders the last time they contacted me, most places its between £11.50-14.50 lidl are paying £16 an hour for a forklift driver I may renew my forklift license

thats the truth of it ,,, class2 multidrop is 12 an hour and class 1 50p an hour more ,,,
I wouldnt put my car licence on the line for that , let alone the big books.

I'm seeing much higher rates than that for Coded tig and stick welders in certain parts of the UK, £15-16 is in the upper bracket here for paye very few places offer more

night shift plant maintenance is about the only way to get decent money here , but thats usually because its bigger companies pay matching English rates of pay .

Unless you have expert skills/knowledge in a niche area of the market, or are up the food chain a bit, engineering in general doesn't pay amazingly well. We just had this conversation in the office the other day, and this is bearing in mind that we are a bespoke nuclear engineering company which generally pays pretty well for the area.

Having said that, you could apply that to work life in general. Either have specialist skills/knowledge, or climb the corporate ladder.

Sure a few people here and there seem to get paid more than everyone else for the same thing... but it's rare.

I agree to a point in that various companies packages for staff all add up to roughly the same to reduce movement of money chasers, all these big organisations wee wee in the same pot after all.

The example I was quoting was based on folk working in Grangemouth and Hull. When we went to Angola we recruited from both sites and the North Sea. Come pay review time it was based on their uk base salaries. Differences were quite noticeable. This also allows folk to slide slowly up or down due to performance.
Each role had a salary band for the role and grade of the role. So for example the band for a technician at the time was between 20 and 40k. All the chemical guys were quite low down, because though they were the same grade, their industry commanded less and was capped.
Interestingly too depending which side you viewed it from different roles once in the management pool with the same job grade had different pay bands depending on availability of people and levels of financial responsibility. Again the bands were quite wide. Made for interesting reading when you get sent by mistake a spread sheet with all the numbers on for every department, not just your own, including your bosses.

What made it more awkward once you get promoted your expected to explain at pay review time why one guys on buckets loads more than another for doing the same job, but no one has told you all the ins and outs of the HR salary secrets.
