Funny, it never occurred to me to charge more for extraction now that kit is scarce.

I'm having the same issue here as some people as regards to their employer not getting up to scratch with the new laws.

I've spoke with my employer about it and they've decided to take action. According to them getting a new filter for the mobile extraction unit that's over 10 years old and hasnt been used since it supposedly almost caught on fire before is enough to cover their behinds. At this point I'm looking to buy my own air fed system along with the mobile extraction unit up and running. Any advice on the Esab Sentinal A50 air fed system? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Edit: Forgot to add I have zero ventilation at the minute only an open door so anything is better than nothing I guess?

Heath and safety officer is telling them they need to provide one to every employee regardless of how long theyre welding but the company isn't signing off on any, we're talking a £50 million profit last year company, mental.

Tell them that now HSE is self funded they're about to be slapped with some pretty heavy fines if they refuse to comply.

Just wondering, what if the equipment is supplied but the employee doesn't actually use it, is he/she fined??

Can any of the masks be retrofitted with an air pack? I have an ESAB Sentinel and I was thinking to maybe fit air to it. Is this possible?

Most can, I have with my Lincoln 3350, basically get the parts diagram for your helmet and the one for the air fed version and identify the additional/different parts.

I went in BOC today and even they are sold out! They’re waiting for a tonne of warrior air kits to come in.

I would assume so.
Stupid thing to do either way. That’s like knowing there’s a tsunami coming, acknowledging it but then just staying in the danger zone anyway.

It is the company's responsibility to ensure the employees are protected, not just for supplying ppe.

The employee cannot be held responsible, only the employer.

Which means the employer has to protect themselves - make failure to use ppe a disciplinary action - leading to dismissal etc.

As has been mentioned, extraction at source has to be the first port of call where possible.

For most of us, in a hobby environment, we're never that far from a wall or door. A decent 4" extraction fan or blower and a length of Flexi hose or 4"sewer pipe is relativly inexpensive.

You can suck the fume away effectively without compromising shielding gas.

It leaves the air much cleaner so whatever your last resort protection needs to work much less hard.

Helps keep things generally less grubby as the gunk that would be in the air doesn't settle out into your shed.

As said further up, many employers will react by supplying PPE but on an risk reduction hierarchy PPE is near to being the last resort, they should be looking at LEV.
Speaking of which, does anyone know what the rules/regs say about what happens the exhausted fume? The obvious answer is exhaust it to the outside air as all old-school extractors used to do, but since the fume is carcinogenic, presumably now it'll have to be filtered before it can be exhasted to atmosphere? Our outage this year is gong to cost a fortune as we'll have some hellish long duct runs to exhaust fume from the inside of the boiler casing to atmosphere, and we're one of the smallest plants in the waste-to-energy field!

Me too. A slate/granite emporium I've used has a huge one with a waterfall at the back and extraction. I try to do really nasty stuff out of the door but it's not very appealing when it's this weather.

They had one when I was at Esab. Best thing I ever used. Absolutely awesome bit of kit.

Yes, I agree and have no doubt that most of us do exactly that but what about passers by/the rest of us? What do the H&S bods make of this? Isn't it a bit ironic that they have X, Y and Z rules for keeping workers safe inside but it's OK to vent/let it all go to anyone who's outside??
