Murex, what compressor did you use? I looked at HVLP guns for car bodywork and they all appear to consume a gazillion CFM of air. Even my 3hp compressor didn't appear to be up to the job, on paper. Mind you, with a 150-litre receiver it would probably manage a higher airflow for a minute or two at a time. Have I read this wrong and I could use a HVLP gun without problems?

I've never used HVLP but the claimed benefits are very attractive. Even on car bodywork, it's a pain in the rear having more paint around the garage than on the car, especially when painting smaller parts like bumpers. I can imagine it's a hundred times worse with something like gates and railings that are mostly empty space.

mines an old 3ph hydrovane with a 200ltr tank i think its about 23 cfm not sure but i had it from a tyre fitting place when they were closing down cant use a air mask as it has a little oil in the air line in line filters catch it but i wouldnt use it for a air mask

Maybe I'm stupid, but I don't wear gloves. maybe its the type of welding I do? chassis and spaceframe work, mostly on 180-200 amps.

I think we all weld without gloves at times but they are best worn at all times
for radiation as well as hot sparks.

try some tig gloves as they are more Supple and not a thick

Well, I bought a base-model DeVilbiss HVLP gun and tried it for the first time last night. It's so much better than my high-pressure gun with a fine, soft spray that all goes in the general direction of the work

It gave good results with both the water-based basecoat and the 1K clear lacquer and my compressor seems to be able to cope fine.

The only fly in the ointment is that within a minute or so of first use, I felt a "click" in the trigger and after that the air was flowing constantly
Thankfully, I still had control of the paint itself so was able to finish the job and just disconnect the air supply between coats. I'll investigate later and may have to return it under warranty.

Very impressed, though. I think the high-pressure guns will be consigned to a corner of the garage now.

Oh, and I used the UPOL 1K lacquer too. I had it left over from a previous (metallic) job but having heard people (outside this forum) saying it had to be 2K to go over water-based, I had thought I wouldn't be able to use it.

It seems to have worked very well.

i always wear gloves, and boots too, after a recent incident with a big spark, my reeboks and the bit in between my two smallest toes :O

This reminds me of a post on another forum where a guy asked...." Where can I buy Vegan Welding Gloves?" First reply......"I can understand you being a Vegetarian but why you wanna eat a pair of welding gloves for is beyond me..........
