i was welding structural stiffeners on columns using a cherry picker last week, i had to give up cos the wind was blowing me and the machine
around and i couldnt get good runs, probably would have looked like the proverbial pidgeon droppings if i had attempted it again today

Shipyard trick - tack the handrail of the basket to whatever your working on. But make sure you grind the tack before you set off again!
Obviously this is a trick that is a little non H&S.

think that may be frowned upon if its not your cherry picker...plus i could see that causing more issues in an emergency GTFO situation where you need to get away quick...you would never remember, nor have time, to grind yourself free

Your right, but it gets done lots. Especially with man baskets on cranes.

surely something like a ratchet strap may be better, as long as you had a good sharp stanley knife to hand if you needed to release it quick? then again if i were in the basket and had to leave quick i would probably drop the bloody knife lol

Tack a short off-cut of box to the workpiece then clamp to the cage with a carver clamp.

Ha Ha funny suggestions, i normally jam the cage against the column but the wind was blowing me and my mask about so much i gave up
