Welding threaded rod to round bar

There would be some complications with heat and stone, but unless you are trying to pull the walls back in (ie use the screw to move the stone) then you could just fit right up to the stone, flush, and then weld.

As in not bother with the thread at all.

Again, I can see there may or may not be issues with the heat and the stone, but Im sure they could be gotten around.

If you don't need to really tension it, could you drill and pin it or even slot and wedge?

Slot and wedge might look nice if it is a period dwelling.

do this all the time.....used to reduce the ends to be welded to almost a point then weld the tapers up....have a log wood set of V trestles to turn them........
forget the taps and dies at that size, been there and done that.......it'll all end in tears plus black bar is crap for that as it's surface is not a true round......
now in the position to turn 6m lengths for screw cutting......
if in a hurry and the job is not on show still use the welding .....

How about using tube instead of rod so that the threaded rod can be inserted into it and either welded at the end of the tube or plug welded through some suitably placed holes in the tube. Hole in wall would need to be slightly larger to pass the tube through but no doubt will be covered by your plates / steel 'S'.
As suggested by Bob, you could even thread the tube directly and use BSP backnuts.

Why make it so difficult ? A simply prepared butt weld is more than strong enough

What do you have to do about temperature expansion/contraction? A 4m rod is going to contract about 1mm (room temp to freezing). If it's already tight to a stone wall, I wouldn't expect even a solid lump of granite could resist. Would that be an issue? Is there a known workaround? Or is a millimetre or two nothing to worry about?

I'd just butt weld. Could even sleeve it with a bit of pipe if you were worried.

Shouldn't be a problem seen plenty of old buildings with wall ties holding them together
