Be difficult to make up a new pair the same as these.

Isn't that a lathe in the background? Can't you mill a couple of bits of stainless bar to fit?

A basic milling setup on the lathe only consists of a cutter in the chuck and either a piece of sturdy angle plate else even just a block of hardwood on the cross slide, to clamp/screw the metal to and get it vertical. It doesn't need to be owt fancy if you just take it steady.

Fair enough. I have a box of cutters somewhere I may have a play.

Incredibly a set of screws just turned up on eBay. SLOT HEAD SLOW TAPER 5/16 WHITWORTH 26 TPI it would appear. I'll still finish these ones off tho.

With regard those screws, if they're the ones I'm thinking of, a centre drill is the perfect countersink for those. Pop one at the side of a centre drill and check. I'm guessing the angle will be the same. A standard hacksaw blade followed by opening and tidying up the slot with a flat needle file makes a lovely width screwdriver slot, btw.

If you're getting them to the heat where you can apply a filler, at best you're going to ruin the temper. At worst, you'll get cracks or have sections cracking off. Insert faces are quite brittle once they've gone through the heat treatment process. People wouldn't make replacement inserts as preference if repairing or altering the old ones was a trivial matter. With inserts, it's either leave be else replace.

Btw, a copper scraper will readily take that paint overflow off the slide without damaging the slide metal.

Ok point taken thanks. Don't want to make up new jaws and can't afford to experiment with these. I might grind them a bit more though.

The overpaint is on top of masking tape.

Why not put them in 4 jaw and face? I have done this with my vertical slide jaws. I milled the first with a 12mm carbide cutter but 4 jaw is a better finish. I bought a fly cutter but not tried it yet.

And then to finish them off, I faced them on the lathe.

Awkward because the size of each piece was just exactly as difficult to grip as you could get.

They wouldn't fit with the jaws stepped and with them this way round, I needed a spacer behind.
Anyhow, all done now and they fit.

I did have to pull the single jaw out by 5mm so that will need some packing fitting to the back, probably a couple of bolt heads.
Catalogue says it will grip a six inch pipe so that's what I am aiming at.

Just need to figure out how to cut the V slot to accommodate it. NB: I have deliberately inset the jaws 10mm behind the main jaw so I can leave them in place without them interfering. Again, I might pack them out to be flush with the main jaws if that looks better.
