Thanks mate. Will try this first. Does that imply that it will run of a 13amp plug?...............it was doing this with PO. I have a heavier supply with the blue sockets if it is better suited.
I have a feeling I may be back with some more queries on it

If the motor is capacitor run you need a motor run cap, if it's capacitor start you can use either[motor run or starting cap].
You can't go wrong with a motor run cap.
To check, look to see if it has a switch in the winding the cap goes in. The cap start motors I had, had fecking great centrifugal switches on the end of the armature[hard to miss].

The diagrams on plate of Electric motor: do they not just refer to the 6 wiring terminals here?
This is another fully functioning compressor all wired as it should be . I cannot make out any writing on the CAP. I cannot borrow it either .
Only switch I know of is little pressbutton one on the left of pic. I did have armature exposed but would not know what a switch on it was.

A friend of mine threw out a pressure washer and I fixed it with the same 45uf 450v capacitor as your motor needs so I got a working washer for £8.57. The old capacitor was well and truly melted. It only has the one capacitor and runs off 13amp circuit.
My compressor man dont' keep that capacitor. Quick look on Farnels has them about £35 £ouch!! Before splashing out...............

The just visible writing seems to suggest it may be ok. I tried it in my other compressor which is a Direct drive 3hp. The cap in that one was 350 volt. Worked no problem. Putting it back into my problem compressor produced a hum from motor. No burning smell or owt. Belt off motor and no load. All wired up through the units electrics and using the start switch procedure.
If cap worked other motor it is ok? That other motor only has one cap too so is a run cap motor?
How do you check these caps with a meter?

I too have inherited a karcher power washer, i was meant to repair it for the mother in law but she passed away quite suddenly last year just after i took it apart and found the capacitor burnt out. I want to repair it out of sentimental value and respect to her (already have my own power washer) so i was wondering where you got your capacitor from

You'll need a special multi-meter with a capacitance function to measure properly if the capacitor is O.K.
A standard multi meter can be used on the resistance (ohms) setting. You should first short the capacitor contacts together to fully discharge it. Then connect the meter leads to the terminals you should see the resistance reading steadily rise as the capacitor charges. Repeat a few times and look for a consistent result of final resistance and time to charge.
Did you try giving the motor a flick by hand to start when you connected the trial capacitor? It may have had enough to run the motor just not to start it in the first place. All the capacitor does on a single phase inductance motor is create an artificial second phase. The size of the capacitor controls the phase difference. Different motors with different numbers of poles or different internal inductance (due to windings) require different size capacitors to tune the phase difference for maximum motor torque.

I got mine from a local electronic/electric supplier called JPG electronics in Chesterfield. It was same spec as the original but physically a little smaller so I padded it with some gaffer tape to hold in place
Thanks Norman. I will try to give a helping hand Do we plug cap in first? I only put the multimeter across the contacts on ohms setting and got no resistance reading. Unplugged of course.
I ave had experience before with Capacitor Discharge Ignition where the readings were meaningless IE. It was breaking down under load.

This might be helpful, but as said already you need a dedicated capacitor tester to check what the value is exactly.

Tried it all again playmates. That cap. works fine on other compressor and checks out on Multimeter. Connected it all up same as another identical working model.
It kept blowing 13 amp fuse. Wired it into the more powerful box and put a big blue plug on it. It hummed and when I pushed the motor blade it went under it's own power for aboput 20 secs. Then it tripped it's own reset switch next to cap. Thing is ............the Motor was turning the wrong way!!
Push the button to reset and it will sometimes start itself going clockwise instead of anti. It trips in seconds and never goes above about 50 rpm.
