Seperate fuse 32amp sockets would be best for the portamig, that way you can run full power no probs if need be. I would be inclinded to do the same with the compressor as well, ok it costs a few extra quid but will be worth it in the long run. Make sure you use the right cable size so there is no power loss to each machine

...sounds good to me dude...so what cable to use then would be the next question...

...the compressor will be around 30 feet from the fusebox, whereas the Portamig socket will be about 2 foot from the fusebox......just inside workshop door...

It would never be used for anything else.

Can somebody give me an idea of the best brands i should be looking at for a compressor. i have £400ish to spend and it has to be single phase,
i'm hoping to move to all airtools in the future and maybe do abit of spraying

...I would imagine you are going to be in the SIP/Clarke/Sealey market there my friend...and with a bit of hunting around you will be able to get a 100 litre jobbie......which is the minimum that was suggested to me at college if you intend running air tools for any length of time.

I have a 3hp 150l Clarke Air Industrial. It works well and apart from needing new bearings in the motor (easy job) at mega hours (£12) and a new start/run capacitor (£18) it has only needed oil changes. It is kept outside under a tarp and has been in use for about 9 years now.

I run it of a heavy duty extension lead that runs off the cooker socket! It has a 15 amp fuse in the lead.

Spend your money on cfm rather than tank capacity - you can always add that later.

You also have to consider your power supply, 3 hp is about tops for 240v single phase, and with a 3 hp motor you'll get about 14 cfm.

I have a Clarke 14cfm compressor and after fixing the faults it came with it works fine and I use a lot of compressed air.

This might have been mentioned but a lot of the figures given are when the air is under no pressure. So it might flow 14cfm but only with 30psi.

Also a lot of the cheaper 1s claim 10CFM+ but this is only the speed in which the tank can empty.

I've got a cheap sealey 1 off ebay. it was a second, it came with a bend handle, and a small crack. It was a couple of hundred and is 3hp and 100 litre tank.

Works fine for just about everything i do.
When runing a DA sander it runs out after a few minutes. but it only loose about 3psi per minute tank pressure when the motor is running. So nearly flows enough.

In my brief experinece of DIY compressors (i have a screw type one at work , but thats about 4k! worth) , i bought (on recommendation, an abac 3hp with 50L tank) cost about £300,00 five years ago, been used every day (use it for spraying and air tools! - together!!) for past five years, not a hiccupp! highly recommended!
