Just a little update on the heater (In case anyone's actually still interested). I woke up feeling pretty grotty this morning, and slowly got worse, so around 12:00 I decided to give up on the day as a bad job, and went back to bed. I somehow managed to fall asleep, and didn't wake up again until 16:00. Surprisingly I felt a bit better after that (Dizziness had calmed back down to just an uncomfortable level, and my legs/back were only feeling like I'd fell down the stairs, rather than the "hit by a car" feeling they'd been giving all morning).
Not wanting to waste the "Usable health period", I hobbled out to the garage (still in dressing gown and pyjama bottoms. ) and brazed the carrier tube together properly. The closest that bit can get is about two inches away from the flame, it's completely shielded from the heat by the BRASS flame basket, and it's in contact with the paraffin soaked wick, so I'm 100% certain it's not getting anywhere near hot enough for the braze to let out any nasty vaporised zinc while the heaters lit. After that I hobbled back to bed for an hour to let me ankles calm down, then hobbled back out to reassemble it with another new wick.
Dragged it into the house, plonked it on the table, and went back to bed for another hour to let the wick soak. Lit it on there, ogled at how perfect the flame crown was on a new wick with no trimming, took a couple of pictures, then (ignoring the instructions about "Moving it while lit") put it in the living room.
It's been in there burning for a couple of hours now, the CO level has stabilised at 5ppm, and downstairs is hot as all hell !........ I think that could be a win right there.
Thought I'd put the little Valor Minor next to it it for the photo, just to show how dinky and cute it is. Oh, and the Aladdin's wet tank is just condensation. It was out in the garage last night, and the paraffin must have got somewhere around 0'C, so as soon as it came back into the house it sucked all the moisture out of the air like a bathroom mirror.
There's still a few "Tiding up" jobs to do on this, but overall, even with the few unexpected problems, I'm happy I got this and did it up. It's gave me a little sense of accomplishment that's been sadly missing from my life for the last 12 or so months.
