what is the spec

hi all i have just inherated a old atlas copco compressor and was just after some info on it, ie cfm hp just so i can get a idea of what tools and guns i will be able to run.there is a plate on the side but it dosent really make any sense to me.on the plate there is a few details here goes

1. ser nr, B170237

2. type, LC302

3. capacity 150ltr -5.3ft3

4. work press kg/cm2 10.5 - lb/in2 150

5. test press kg/cm2 15.8 - lb/in2 225

6. work temp 100c 212f

7. manufact 1967

i think no1 is the serial no,no2 is the type,no 3 is the size of the tank no 4,and no 5 not to sure, no 6 is max working temp,no7 is year of manufacture

the main reason i had this is because it had a big tank and i hoped it would run a chisel,a gravity fed gun,tuoch up gun, a die sander, and a recipracating saw, not at the same time though induvidually. it is good working order i think and i think it could be a good bit of kit with a bit of tlc any help on this matter is gratefully welcome as im new to this thank you in advance

Seems to me you've read the plate on the reservoir, not the compressor itself.

Those specs all relate to the tank. The two you are confused about are the recommended max working pressure and the pressure to which the tank has been tested.

Look at the other bits for info on what it can do. The horsepower of the motor will give you a good guesstimate of its capabilities. Or a photo? Is it rotary or regular?

just went and had a look there is nothing on the pump at all.on top of the motor is a black box witch has a plate on but is blank,its is belt driven is this what you mean by rotaory. i will get some pics up

it will probs be a piston pump is it single or twin / if its a twin and one cylinder is bigger than the other it will be twin stage .if cylinders are the same size its single stage

it is a single cylinder i think,i sent a email to atlas copco ask the same,and i recieved a phone call from a very nice man and he sort of shed some light on it but couldnt make a defo decision on what it is with out seeing it, he seem,s to think the cfm is about 7-8 and 3hp motor.I was wondering would i be able to upgrade the pump and motor to say a 15cfm and the relevent motor or would it more economical to buy a new one

machine mart do replacement pumps 14 cfm 160 quid or 185 the motor will be ok 2 use providing the pulley and motor speed match the pump eg your motor will probably be 1450 rpm some pumps work on an 3000 rpm motor so u gotta work out if its worth altering a 3hp 3000rpm motor is 97 quid

you should be able to use the motor you already have for a 15cfm pump you may have to change the pully so the new pump will run at what ever speed is specified when you get the new pump

this is probably gone sound really stupid, how do i work out the pulley and the pump ratio to get the right pulley

you would measure the pully ie a pully of 100mm on a motor running at a 1000rpm driving a pully of 200mm the 200mm pully would then be running at 500rpm

i paid 20 quid for my atlas copco put on a second hand pump at 15 quid earned loads of cash spraying cars with it and then sold it for 50 quid years later.
i wasnt doing bad i was only 16 or 17 at the time

i only payed 50 for this and im building a mini with a 2.0ltr engine in that was the main reason i bought it. im off to cromwell tools this morning to get some bits for it

hi guy's been a while havent touched the compressor since we last spoke.went in the shed on tues put a new air pressure switch on it fired it up ran to about 120 psi got scared and switched it off,it was really loud and the pipe that comes out of the side off the pump was red hot as i found out (burn on face as bent over to look at pressure gauge) thought i would do a little service on it so boght a new gauge some oil ,and still no wiser what the spec is but heres a few pics any help is greatly appreciated

p.s were would i drain the oil and put new in

hi guys i will be having a look today at the compressor.would i be right in saying that in the first picture the square nut infront of the pump is were the oil goes in? was also wondering would i still be able to get a pump gasket set for this pump?

bit of a update put some oil in it and turned it on ran upto 145psi then cut out and kicked back in about 90psi,so adjusted the pressure switch now it runs up to about a 125 psi and cuts out, and back in at 90psi,but the problem now is it's leaking oil from just behind the pump wheel a seal has gone.so decided to take the pump off and strip it down to see if there is any damage to the internals. The only prob ive got is i cant disconect the crank from the piston and was wondering is there any perticular way this is done i have a few pics of the pump of the machine and being dismantled

if you have a spray gun,connect it up to the compressor.open gun wide pull the trigger and hold it open. to see if the compressor can keep up.if it does your laughing.
