what kind of paint is this

Names and constituent things are pretty confusing, specially when it comes to US sites. There def are alkyd synth enamels though. Anyways, it all pretty much points to synth or the same sort of animal in the spec sheet - truck paint etc.

If your man is correct with his synthetic then yes its a case of warm it, fit it, walk away from it. My advice would be to skip the first 2 steps if it is synth as it is as you say bulldozer paint and you won't be able to buff it. Better off if you don't want 2k with a 1k solvent based paint which when dry you can buff to a fair quality.

can i just ask what exactly you mean when you say 1k solvent based paint.and if its any good can ye give me a name to look for please.will it harden enough when cured so as not to scratch like crazy with the slightest touch.

2k means a 2 part paint system ie the paint and the activator
1k means a single part paint system where by the paint will cure with no other chemical

take cellulose that is a 1k solvent based paint
and water based speaks for its self

both 1k and 2k use a solvent thinner to allow the paint to be sprayed

i really appreciate your replies on this guys.have to admit im starting to regret ever starting this job now.its not that ive never sprayed before,but only on inconspicuos places on a car,not a bloom'n roof and as for synthetic i had no idea of the draw backs.is celly as tricky to use as some people say and does it have to be cleared.is all 1k acrylic crap or is it just the ones ive come accross from HB body.thanks again.

celly doesnt need to be cleared and i dont think its bad to use, polishes very easily and obvioulsy 2k is way better but if you dont have the gear to use it, its not an option

pretty much as snooper says. 1k solvent based paint (celly for the want of a better title) air dries (cures) i.e the paint is mixed 50/50 with thinner to enable it to be sprayed. As the warm air gets to it, the solvent (thinner) evaporates leaving behind the paint. So far?
2k is thinned (normally no more than 10%) to enable it to be sprayed and the solvent evaporates leaving behind the paint. BUT the paint has been mixed with 50% hardener (activator) which chemically cures (hardens) the paint. It is exactly akin to your body filler. If you like, your isopon/upol/bondo etc is a 2k filler. You add the hardener (catalist) mix it and it chemically dries.

I use synthetic paint quite a lot to respray Land Rovers - as already said you can't polish/buff it and if you sand the surface in any way you need to allow 48 hours for the surface to reharden or the next layer of paint you put on may pickle up.

As you're asking if you can buff/polish it, are you trying to get imperfections or runs out?
You can't do this with synthetic, but if you have problems in the paint, just flat it off again and repaint - got to be easier than trying to wipe it all off and starting again with a different paint type?
If you need to blend the paint in to the next panel then you're going to struggle without painting that one too.

no not so much imperfections as the paint went on lovely and i managed to keep the dust of it etc.i was more looking to blend it as it meets the old finish on the qtr panel.as i have had a quick go at trying this now a seeing what actually happens with my own eyes,i reckon its coming of.might try using a 1k acrylic with a 1k clear.at least that will be easier to isolate when i do get round to a full respray.got to say though,if they could make a synthetic that you can work on to blend it would be a brill product.i really do like the finish and the fact that it aint going to kill me.

I regularly use Selemix synthetic, which given 2-3 weeks can be cut and polished like celly. It's distributed by PPG, they also do a cellulose but it's rubbish!

now thats very interesting to me.i would have to do a test panel with it first though{once bitten and all that}.does it still take longer to dry and harden?how can it carry the gloss through the top layer/skin of the paint.
