what paint for double decker bus chassi?

Hi,
firstly I would like to say hallo to every one here. I've been on this forum for ages,but never registered because find answers easily but now Im lost.


Some info:
chassi been wire brush,flap disc cleaned,shot blasted ( I spent hell lot of time on it and remove maximum of flake rust and old paint)
maximum 2x coats
prime coat will be done now and top coat after winter


Can any one recomend best paint for it?

I know that some paint are porous and epoxy - 2 pac paint not. Is any chance get good porous paint which last long free of rust over the winter? Reason why I dont want use epoxy is, because Im not sure if I manage sand down every corner or hard accesible area on the chassi specially on braking system and others spaces. If there is no choice I will go for epoxy. How good preparation for top coat is nessesery? I dont looking on spending on the paint, because I spent so many hours of scraping down chassi, that I dont want to do that any more. What about temperature? Is it ok to do paint job if is about 5-10 C ?

What you thing about my favorites ? Both of them looks to by designed for hard condition.

Although expensive, POR-15 is designed for your application. One coat, no primer, likes to be painted over rough metal as long as it is clean.

Chassis black, it's what it's made for and it does the job.

You say it's been shot blasted , straight after would of been the perfect time to apply epoxy, it would of stuck good.

id go with epoxy , the joton is somewhat tolerant to less than perfect prep ,but do the best you can though

as for the por15 suggestion...id think long and hard about that , lots of people have had it fail badly and the prep needs to be 110% for it to stick

Most epoxy primers don't like being applied in cold temperatures,curing can be a problem

Jotamastic. Have used that and normal automotive epoxy. There's a winter grade too. It's a marine epoxy, so less fussy than many car paints. Tough as anything. But you will need to sand it if there's much time gap before topcoating, and that's no fun.
Current car is wearing Jotun + chassis black, done close together to avoid the sanding bit.

Im not sure about POR-15, because need very good prep work, but on the bus chassi its almost impossible to do that.

What temperature is still good for paiting epoxy? What happend if I dont sanded down epoxy primer on some hard reach places, corners and of course on pitted areas? Does epoxy need good preparation? What paint is good for hand brush prep?


What about some expansive paint for oil rigs, ships or industrial stuff? I checked www.leighspaints.com and they do lot of industrial paints for higway agency, railways and oil rigs. I dont belive that road workers are bothered with good preparation and paints are aplied in damp conditions, salt mist or on rusty surfaces and they stick like sh*t on it. Im little bit sceptical about "green" or eco friendly stuff, because Ive been using engine cleaner which was "old style stuff" and always worked very well and later on they "improve" cleaner to eco friendly style and it was never been good like before.

I would be interested to be pointed towards instances of POR-15 failure. I have never met anyone with a complaint, apart from the cost. Prep is easy, wire brush and degrease, it holds better on rough metal.

with the winter hardener its good to use this time of year , in hard to reach places give a scrape and wire brush best you can , wont be as good as blasted steel but it will stick and protect it

I used it on a Mustang. Prepped well, nice coarse surfaces, it didn't last well. Reckon it's too fussy and too expensive, there's better and cheaper things out there.

Just done that. 1st page only to be fair, but every occurrence was due to either trying to use it on new metal without "metal ready" or trying to use it as a topcoat. It is INTENDED for painting directly over degreased rust, once the loose stuff has been removed. It will of course fail on metal that has no "key".

It has the best marketing department in the business but that is the only thing going for it in my opinion.

Followed the instructions exactly using metal ready result = peeled off.

Did a tank with the tank sealant exactly as per instructions, peeled off inside ruining the tank as it kept blocking.

Well I would be delighted to find a cheaper alternative, that has good shelf life. Sadly, I have yet to find one. I have used POR-15 a lot, sometimes without more prep than brushing loose material. I have not yet had a failure.

just clean it best you can within your time and budget ..obviously cleaner is better

but a good wire wheeling and 80 grit grinder should sort it

the jota data sheet says

Condition during application
The temperature of the substrate should be minimum +10°C (Std) (-5°C in WG) and at least 3°C above the dew point of
the air, temperature and relative humidity measured in the vicinity of the substrate. Good ventilation is required in
confined areas to ensure proper drying.

what about 2pack expoxy pitch from dacrylite, very good on the bottom of my boat!!
