What type of Air Sander would suit my needs

DA? Cant work out what this referring too. Something to do with Orbital? Since this item was listed as being idea, for sanding/grimding rust and welds, i figured it was worth a punt.. I believe its orbital, but it says that it will "grind" so i am willing to give it a go.

Edit: DA = Dual Action.. Worked it out

Jacksparrow pointed the right one out for grinding, the one you put up is orbital

I have already asked a question about this product,scroll down and you will see that the experts say that they are DA and cannot be converted to a grinder,

Ahh.. ******! Looks like i mig have got carried away and bought the wrong thing. Will see how it looks when i get it.. Annoyingly another seller (selling the same items) specifically said that it was ideal for grinding welds, but they didnt come back to me about another question, so i bought the one i posted above.

That says nothing about "grinding welds", so if its no good, i dont have a leg to stand on.

I got my DA sander and really like it.. I am happy, but since its orbital, it doesn't have the rotational torque that I would like for certain jobs.

So I am now back to square one.

4" air grinders are commonly used in body shops and the pads come in loads of grades/materials

I have an air grinder exactly like this, but it takes 'disks' not 'pads'... Mine came with a 6mm grinding disk, but also takes cutting disks.

I want something which takes sanding pads, so that I can remove rust/paint and keep a good finish.

Of course I could load it with a flap disk, which would do the job.. But I specifically want to use cheap sanding disks.

You can put a backing pad and flexi disc on them on them that are cheap and can be bought in fine grit.

The reason you can't put the cheap disc that you are talking about on them is because they rip them to pieces in seconds.

And thats exactly the part I am asking about.. I can't see how they will fit on a grider, as they have a centre spindle...

I just want a way to ripping paint/galv/rust off and leaving a nice smooth finish.

You have a 4" air grinder, why not use 120 grit flexi pads? 120 will easily give the results you need.You need one of these

You can get M14 backing pads on ebay that will let you use velcro discs but the grinder will be too fast for them.

Some air tools have flow control knob so you may be ablle to slow the grinder down enough to use them.

And we have now gone full circle This is the tool I started looking at and I didn't really understand what it was.

I assume those orange disks do not wear and are flexible.. But the spindle in the middle means that they could only be held at an angle against the work piece, and there is a serious danger the if you wern't careful you could hit the workpiece causing damage.

I don't really understand what its actually for and how it works.. But I am probably being stupid!

A bit like you discribe. But dear and takes there twist on disc. This would then be fitted to the rightangle die grinder.
Not a lot of the "drill" type are not designed for the high speed of air or even some power tools and will just wobble/vibrate

I'm pretty sure you'll find the pads fit on the very bottom of that spindle and the locking nut will be countersunk similar to a flexi disc backing pad on an angle grinder.

So when it's tightened up the pad will sit pround of the locking nut.
