I have a 10KVA honda SDMO built into my van. I can run the lincoln 170s stick at 150 A and can use the warrior inverter mig at 250A too.

I had a Chinese 125a stick inverter, ran it for many many hours from a non-avr equipped 5kw 2 stroke set without any problems at all.

My weldanpower 250 d10 (basically a ranger 10) has 10kw of aux power and will run the AC/Dc tig inverter and the mts255 multiprocess machine at 200a for stick.

The 6kw lister sr2 set that we have will also run the AC/dc tig inverter but it does make it bark a bit when you hit the pedal down hard.

Plenty of generator options out there, just make sure they are big, heavy and old and you should get good performance out of them.

Don't forget, generators are usually rated for continuous and standby power. Continuous is obvious, it's the kva it can pump out continuously, standby is the max it can put out for a limited time. People usually quote stand by power ratings as it makes the genny sound more powerful than it really is.

It's usually the welder that packs up before the generator but yes, oneor the other becomes a smoke emitter and it costs £££ to get the smoke put back in.
