What's this part? (clarke air compressor pump)

Can anyone name the black part pointed to in the photo? Some type of breather?

This part is missing on a recently purchased second hand compressor and I need to buy or make a replacement. From a quick glance, the thread appears to be M16 x 1.5

I kinda doubt it as I put a finger over the hole when I turned the pump over by hand and couldn't feel any pressure / suction. There is definitely pressure elsewhere.

There is an oil level viewing glass on the side of the pump making a dipstick redundant?

I'm wondering whether just to turn a plug M16 x 1.5 and add a small breather hole.

It's just a crankcase breather as @zzr1200 says. Tried asking them for spares? These are all fairly generic pumps on these units.

Sounds like a plan, depending on the thread diameter in the crankcase, maybe a hole of 6 or 8 mm most of the way through the cap/plug with a 1 or 2 mm hole for the last 4mm, just to restrict possible oil fling out the top of the new breathers hole...

Make sure you give them the model number and they will sort you out.
Don't put a blanking plug in there without a breather, you will be in a whole world of pain.

Not sure I entirely trust the dimensions given on eBay. It's probably all the same stuff shipped over from China and measured with a plastic ruler.
