which oil use into an air compressor

Hi guys,


I bought a second hand compressor (Airmec CRM 102 2HP) a couple of month ago. I plug in only yesterday and then realise that I didn't which oil put in it.

Do you know?

Use a synthetic oil from a refergation supplier. grade 40 is the best. I have a mate in the wholesale business who can get you a very good price. PM me if you want details. He is based in Ireland so postage would be svery little.

Sorry I forgot to mention that, it is a belt driven one with 100L receiver.

Most places that sell air tools have compressor oil. I picked up some cheap a while back. Supposed to be 30 or 40 weight but most bottles just say "compressor oil".

Many have used 30wt non-detergent motor oil. One of my compressors actually listed it as recommended.

What motor oil are you putting in? I have a 10W40 semi-synthetic oil for the car, will this do the job?

2 other probably stupid question:

1. Do we need to change the oil, I could not find the way to empty the sump ?

2. How much does a compressor take? I have not seen any gauge telling the oil level neither.
Can we really put too much oil in it?

3. Is it the same oil use in the air tool? I have 1L of Air tool oil somewhere...

Synthetic will work if it does not leak _any_ oil. It has a habit of finding the slightest leak and p***ing out.

Yes it needs to be changed. It will accumulate gunk and water.

2. How much does a compressor take? I have not seen any gauge telling the oil level neither.

Mine took about 6 oz. Mine is simple, fill to bottom of plug.

Yes too much oil will cause churning and the oul will get hotter. Some have a site glass, others you cant get more than needed as the fill hole is at the level of the oil.

its preferable u have airfilter fitted to reduce wear due to ingress of dust ect .the only servicing needed is drain tank daily. in use clean air filter every few month depending on what use . once oil changed it will last years ,the only other thing is check tension of belts for wear and thats it it will be ok to use in dust free enviroment till u get a filter fitted

I don't know how much the previous owner use it like that but based on the dust on it I would say that the compressor was not on a free dust environment.

I can only hope it did not suffer to much.

At the moment, I am not using it I want to this fix before. I just drain all the air yesterday and refill it to see if it was in working order and it is.

fit whatever filter u can get hold of that will go on. mines of a stilh saw. any freeflow filter will do . even a tube will do with holes drilled along it and wraped with a scotch pad

You do need an air filter of some sort.
Auto oil filters will work as small air filters.
Usually single grade oil is recommended,I was told detergent type oil keeps the dirt in suspension , instead of letting it settle out.

It is important to use the correct oil for these smaller, modern compressors. They have a smaller capacity and run at a higher speed than the oldies so oil is worked harder. Go for a piston compressor oil, 30 grade. Change it every 6 months for the best protection. Best place to buy it is a local engineering merchant, possible a local tractor service place or look for a local lubricating oil specialist. My preferred brand is Morris, you could call them to find a local stockist.

Air filter wise, a good tip seen on this forum is to use a canister type car oil filter. Almost any of a reasonable size will do, you just need to find a threaded adaptor to couple it to the intake.

I like the oil filter usage for this, I was already thinking of building a lovely little box and add some scothbrit stuff :-)

I will have a look to the thread tonight I think the compression fitting will fit on both side.

For the oil, I will have a go in the different shop around me, and see if I can find the right oil.

I already look on sealey website and they are selling a oil which is SAE15 so I supposed it is 15 grade.
Am I correct?

Yes, correct. Thats quite a low viscosity, more like an air motor oil. I would say 20 or 30 would be better.

Thats because they are basically motors, same moving parts, only electric driven.
