I bought 4 secondhand lateral filling cabinets & put mdf tills and divisions in each, works fine, robust steel drawers & the runners are v heavy duty. Sit nicely under a workbench.

I was going to suggest filing cabinets. If you don't like the whole cabinet just take the drawers out and put them in your own frame

I have a stack of heavy duty runners available taken from a boathouse before rebuild and all new fitted, I’ll take some photos and post in for sale section.
I think making your own deep wide draw under bench is worth it, and making a sliding shelf below that would also be good.

There are some bargains to be had if you look about, some of the ex utilities/roadside assistance van Bott systems are a good source of drawer units.

I check ebay pretty regularly and get a fair few auction catalogues/links through ebay, haven't seen anything I really like

Came from a recycling charity, think they were £25/cabinet so 12.5/deep drawer, all except two of those became 2 level, one stayed full depth the other 3 level.
The MDF would cost more than the cabinets now.

I wonder if filing cabinet runners are any good.... I bet it I put the word out with a few scrap men I could build a collection pretty quickly....

Depends on the quality of the cabinet I suppose but these look good for at least 100kg per pair.

These are the lateral ones with runners designed to take double the weight of the tall filling cabinets.

Some filing cabinets have half the runner designed into the drawer, some have detachable runners, just check you can get the runners out first.
I keep loads of stuff in old ones from work. plastic wheels on the runners are sometimes a problem if overloaded as mine are.
