I came across a Gunsson battery powered iron i bought on a whim ages ago.
I never thought it would be much good but surprisingly it works very well, I had to solder a new thermistor on my 3d printer yesterday and it saved me loads of time not having to drag out and setup my Antex soldering station.
I have found this as well, especially when soldering aluminium wires, what i find helps is getting a blob of solder on the iron so that i can use that to heat the wire, then a dab of fresh solder to wet it out, works very well and a quick flick of the iron tip on the wire removes the excess.

Is it me or does the solder with resin it go bad if you heat it too long?
