its with all things nowadays nothing lasts as long as what it used to do

even the old push in and pull up tin openers dont last either though i still prefer the cutter type

Other than dog food the only cans I open nowadays are tuna, from Tesco. They used to come with ring pulls, but a couple of months back they changed to the old fashioned style, so now I have to crack out the tin opener. Which is a pain, because my ancient thing cuts around the edge of the can, rather than into the top, which always spills some of the contents. I guess it saves them a few pence per can this way.

We have this one and I would imagine it's possible we've had it 15+ years. I like the fact it takes the top off and leaves no sharp edges. Ironically I even use it tuna cans that have ring pulls, there is a reason though, I have a tuna press for getting the liquid out and when using the ring pull it doesn't fit. The other good thing about the opener is you can use the tins for something where you need a disposable container because there aren't any sharp edges.

It also has a bottle opener for metal caps and also for plastic fizzy drinks, the hook is for ring pulls but it also has a another hook for breaking the seal on jars so making them easy to undo.

If it broke today I would immediately order another

They have moved production to China, and ended the wall mounted one, but others make them

I remember my Granny and my mum using Prestige wall mounted can openers - so I was quite surprised the find the JD one

More than likely changed can supplier - there are patents on the easylift/easy open ends - new supplier might not have the equipment to use them.

I remember going camping with my parents when I was a kid, my mother was trying to cook tea, the shout went up “where’s the tin opener” “errr don’t think we’ve got one” my father set about the tin with a hammer & an old spanner, much butchery later & tea was on the go. It would’ve been a Whitworth spanner, these newfangled Metric ones don’t fit the cans

My dads magiCan thing died recently.

So I bought him a £5 cordless thing, I remembered him saying how their Miele[or whatever] freestanding electric can opener was really good.
I got the elcheapo one and it sounded like it was going to explode and shower me in bit's of plastic, it got a bit the way around and stalled. I
do have a video of it and me repeatedly pressing the button and it not making it all the way around the can.
But when I bought the can opener it came up with a months delivery time, so I bought another one with 3 day delivery. They were identical. So both went back.

I ended up buying about the most expensive cordless can opener I could find, it works but leaves a wavy edge, he's yet to explain why a wavy edge
on the bit that's going in the bin is a problem.

I recon he should be using nans can opener, the old spikey thing.
It's about 120 years old, in the cutlery draw, it works fine. If we have to open a can-me or brothers-we use it.
