Wide front wheels/tyres, ride on mower

the fwd/rev -axle / diff has an MTD part number 618-0067 the dash looks very MTD like


the centre pulley ( F ) is actually the bit that gives it variable speeds there is a belt either side ot the centre moving part
the front plate ( part G) between the top & bottom engine pulley has to be removed to install the front belt
you may also have to unbolt the gearlever bracket ( H )
the lower belt goes from the top engine small pulley to the upper groove on the variable pulley
the upper belt on the variable pulley goes to the axle with the sprung loaded idler ( E ) on the back of the belt
the variable pulley moves using the speed control lever on the right hand of the steering column

the clutch / brake pedal also works the variable speed to the maximum set by the control lever

the belt numbers are likely to be 754-0280 (front) & 754-0281 (rear) but will need confirming with the model number ( it could be near the seat)
there are belts on ebay just be cautious as they are USA sizes ( ie 5/8 section ) ( not A or B section ) and the Kevlar wrapped ones last longer

Been sat here for the last hour thinking how it goes and nothing, i dod think of the way you say but left it as when the clutch pedal is pressed it movea pully F forward to loosen/release drive to the diff pully.

Quick update

It just needed a new carb as choke lever has snapped although it still fires up okay hand control.
New drive belts and a battery. Also got a good set of rear tyres. In all spent an extra £120.

Looking good! Maybe you already know but you run those tyres at quite a low pressure, helps the grip. On our mower the fronts are 20psi & the rear 10psi.

I thought that from when i used to off road but i spoke to a gardener that was looking at it while doing a neighbours garden and he said that tread is better above 20psi. I used to always run my off roaders in mud etc at around 20psi even less all around. Not the used tbat treaa before but to me the tread doesn't matter all that much when in a boggy field.

If you look on the sidewall it will usually tell you the inflation pressure!

Usually tells you a max pressure not inflation pressure. The inflation is highly dependent on weight of the vehicle and terrain.

For example the BFG KM2s I have on the 110 are only have 50psi stamped on them. They're usually run at 28-32psi for road use but if I was on the terrain the OP was asking about then I'd drop them down to about 5-10psi.

Our tractor tyres probably have a maximum pressure of around 50psi as well but they're usually run at 2-3psi. Again it depends on the surface, if there was a lot of road work that would be pumped up.

I'd go by eye but to me for boggy ground those look too hard. Could always do what a neighbour does in Scotland and fit duellies. Has a 6x6 CanAm Outlander and when I was there last week he had a set of duel wheels on the middle axle and was waiting for a second set for the rear axle to take it up to 10 wheels.

There was a local guy who built a lightweight tractor for drawing turf out of the bog. I think it was based on a morris minor engine, gearbox & axle & shod with lawn tractor type tyres. He also had a set of cage wheels around 2' wide that bolted onto the rear rims, constructed from 2" angle iron. It was a fearsome sight with those fitted but it was very successful on very soft waterlogged bog. He earned a good few £ every year drawing out turf for people, especially a wet year when you couldn't use a normal tractor.

IT WORKED

Did the job spot on, stuck once as i tried my luck in a rather dippy ditchy dodgy bit but a good bounce on the seat to get traction and it was off again.

If you do get stuck put it in a low gear then get off & push!

I have a little WheelHorse tractor type thing very similar to yours, and the manual suggests 12psi pressure in the tyres.

Hmm, be gentle on the old girl. They aren't designed to tow anything much more than their own weight. Lots of added strain can do lots of things; wear drive belt, "clutch", gearbox or even tear/crack the chassis. Should be ok if it's fairly level and you're sympathetic but if you're talking about making wheels wider and dragging stuff through mud....
