wood filler = car filler ?

need to "repair" some cracked wood on our conservatory

is wood filler something special worth paying over the odds for , or just go with car filler as its cheaper

edit while in here...the treatment for rotten wood you brush on , worth getting or no

i know im bodging it up , but would prefer a long lasting bodge lol

I would say wood filler would be different to body filler due to the properties of wood. It changes shape, size and moisture content regularly whereas steel tends to stay very uniform in comparison.

It may be suitable but I suspect over time it would need redoing, probably after every winter...

Can’t help you with wood treatment but car body filler works a treat to fill wood.

Wood filler will take a stain better than car filler.

It will be a bit more flexible, as wood will move.

after using both, i would say the only difference is the colour.

If it's the 2 part polyester resin type then it's the same. I don't know if it's cheaper, but you can make your own using liquid resin and talcum powder. Mix the talc into the resin until you have the desired consistency and them mix in the hardener.

any built up filler off the board, adhesion was really crap.

Maybe because the chopping board would have been treated with oil?

However...
I've done resin casting with polyester, and if car filler is the same stuff, then you're right: adhesion is rubbish

When I moved to the house I did a bodge fix repair on the wooden office door with car body filler.

I took a bit of time to recreate and match the existing wood profile. It’s had two coats of varnish in 10 years and still going strong.

It’s gonna have to come out soon as I cracked a pane of glass moving my my new desk, totally my fault.

I will do the same repair with car body filler

I would be careful, body filler sets hard but wood shrinks and expands. If you fill a gaping crack with the old Glenn Miller, then, when the wood bends or contracts, you will make the crack even wider.
Linseed oil putty will always be safe, with extra oil in the mix, and polyurethane fillers, Pu40 etc, are squishy but sticky.

If it's a keeper search for dry flex repair care
Nuts for wood repair.

Car filler types just push the problem a few years down the line.

Starts to pull away from the old wood let's water behind the repair and rots it from the inside

Every major repair on windows I do has been made worse by that kind of filler

Is it flexible. Does it have a primer that draws into the existing thst helps bond the resin to the old substrate.

If not long term will be no better than car body filler unfortunately.

It's expensive yes but long term it's cheap

Look fine from outside but once you saw behind the filler there was little left
