Worried about Arc eye

I found weldquipe comments on how many professional welders still ask for standard glass filters interesting ,my experience is mostly maintenance shops and auto helmets are not the norm,(probably because most companies don't mind supplying cheap glass filters)..i can go to our stores and select new helmet and glass any time .In factories i've worked auto helmets are considered expensive,fragile, not suitable for certain applications (tig/overhead)...and i've yet to find a boss willing to buy me one ....for tig work i use a kemppi helmet with a light orange glass as well as normal filter glass i find this works well for accurate positioning for arc and mig i still use fixed shade flick down cheapy....glad to hear i'm not the only dinosaur still using fixed shade ,i know i can pick up either type of helmet and weld ,and i won't be restricted to only being able to use automatic glass.........

That was just a supportive photo for Tig Paul saying be careful for your eyes.

What happened to me was a gardening incident - got a little prod in the eye from a flowery thing that didn't seem bad at the time. Sore eye for a couple of days that was all. Came back one month later for no reason and I made the mistake of going to the eye doctor who brought out his stanley knife

Even now it's not great - have to be very careful in the shower as it doesn't like water. Can see myself waking up in the morning again and having the same old week with comnstant pain and no sleep at all. It't times like that you appreciate BBC world service.

My experience is eyes can stay bad once you've messed them up a little. Good argument for not messing them up in the first place.

great goggles supplied at work ,,,,,still steam up when used with filter mask ,very comfy,didn;t know they cost £10

I wear normal glasses anyway, normally my glasses that steam up, not the goggles if wearing certain types of dust/fume mask and working overly hard. Normally i dont have a problem with them.

Dont know about wearing under a headsheild, think they might be a bit big for that... will try it tommorow.

hate wearing specs when welding hitch....use a "cheater lens" about 1.5x magnifying for tig work ,nothing for mig/arc......good reason for having autoshield (wearing specs) i find when mask flips down sometimes doesn't quite get to stops and light bounces when wearing specs.....have been known to wear kemppi with cheater lens just to centre punch holes (filter flipped)just so i can see better.........my mask isn't big enough for goggles underneath .....just flip up filter ,use clear underneath for grinding

ive caught the arc a few times from a distance about 6 feet (3m) and i havnt got arc eye

one time i caught a flash from up cloce and i didn't get arc eye eather

am i a super human ?

I think I struck my first arc in 1973, been welding, fabbing and teaching ever since, and cant ever remember getting arc eye, I think some people are just more sensitive than others, not superhuman

This yank recommends finely grated potato. Grate it fine, make a patty with it and place it about 1 inch thick over each eye. He said you should do this even if you THINK you MAY have had a flash for about 20 mins as soon as you can. and this guy looks like he knows his stuff.

I've just seen the same thing done by a guy on a chopper building DVD, it did not work for him though.

I gave my mate arc eye id told him that i was about to strike so he looked away but the rod stuck i mutter under my breath some thing that would get my in trouble with the new moderator and he turned to luck just as i was pulling the rod of the work piece. He eye was red for a week and very swollen

That would give you a bit of a flash, but don't know about a red and swollen eye for a week.

Unless you punched him in it afterwards?

He must have sensitive eyes, i've had loads of flashes but never had arc eye, I remember one bloke i worked with who did a bit of blind tacking, the next day he looked as if his head had been boiled, and a few days after that his face peeled off, not funny really, well not for him anyway

Its human nature to laugh at other peoples misfortune. My normal excuse is the release of adrenalin causes you to laugh. Don'T know if its true but would be good if it was
