Worst Swinden's ever

I thought my broken jaw would take the prize for the worst condition Swinden's ever but no. This one is worse!

Even in the original advert it had holes blown in the side, looks even worse from the inside. I think it's met a few welders in its day.

This rare version doesn't have bolts to hold the jaws on, they are riveted (with bolts).

I just chopped away at it with a cold chisel...

...until the bolts drove out.

With all this grease and oil, I am going to skip the citric and dunk it in a bath of Trisodium Phosphate. Should dissolve all the grease and probably loosen the paint too.

I might actually go to town on this one. Certainly some custom jaws, possibly a rotating base, definitely a fair bit of welding as ever, followed by quite a lot of grinding.

Haha. It is ugly buy hey, for fifty quid, it was worth it for the one good jaw.

Because my first Swindens was missing an entire jaw! So I have a spare.

Incredibly I did find the time to nip back out there, in the dark and fill up a large bucket with Swinden's, then flood it with water and a cup of Trisodium Phosphate. I have used it before with some success though unlike a strong detergent for example, there are no suds and no real signs of it doing anything!

Are you kidding? I will post endless updates detailing every single step until you are begging me to stop. Just count yourself lucky I haven't got my act together with video making yet. That will take boring to an entirely new level ( I waffle, a LOT).

Another slight disappointment, the TSP hasn't really "done" anything you can see.

Sure the parts look clean now but not shown is the amount of scrubbing it needed.

I think the main reason being the cold. Most processes will benefit from heat and it appears TSP might be one of those that really needs heat. A fair bit of the powder had not dissolved and was heaped up at the bottom like a badly stirred cupatea. Also, the process of cleaning relies on the oils being carried off in a solution and that won't happen with big chunks, nor will a water based agent soak in to any thick deposits.

Be much better off with a solvent so my thinking is, perhaps if I heat up the TSP to boiling, it might actually act more like a solvent degreaser rather than a surface cleaner. I may try that with my next project.

Next job for this Swinden's is to dry it off, clean it with a solvent and then decide what mechanical chores to perform. A lot of welding from the look of it.

I use a fish tank heater for anything like that most of the year, makes a huge difference taking it from a couple of degrees upto 25ish

What are you dissolving it in? water?....shouldnt it be a solvent like an alcohol

I would normally wash very greasy/dirty parts in paraffin but I like to experiment with different techniques.
