Yet another powered bead roller project.....

I've recently done a load of work on an MG TD, and experienced the asking prices for parts. I reckon that using any XPAG mechanical components on a machine build counts as a statement of wealth like lighting your cigars with a £50 note!

Seriously though, if you can get the roller die rotation speed down to about 4 or 5 RPM, you should find control of the panel as it's going past the dies to be no problem.

Yeh well you're right about xpag prices, but the cam sprocket was well worn, to the point of being scrap.

Here we are machining a lump of scrap en40 shaft to make an adaptor to mount the mini sprocket on the end of the clutch, and a couple of pics of it all mounted together. From the way it's mounted in the chuck it has been reversed. It still needs a tripple grub screw fixing to mount it on the clutch, and a slot for a keyway between the adaptor and sprocket. I don't know if the clutch is up to it, but fingers crossed.
When I did a trial "hold up" fit, I found the chain was too short - can I change the shafts to drive the lower shaft instead of the upper? Don't want to mount the motor above, it's heavy and unweildy enough as it is?

Well that was a waste of a Sunday afternoon! Fitted the motor, gearbox, clutch and timing gears this evening. It turns the beadroller at 9s per rev. However, I can if I try hard, make the clutch slip. Given that it takes a fair bit of effort to turn the handle when shearing a thinnish sheet of steel, I would say that it's a fail. Boohoo. Next test is to remove the clutch and see if the motor stalls, or fails to start on load. I'm really sorry to lose the clutch, it would have been ideal, since that would have allowed for still using the handle if needed.

I'm driving the lower shaft on my bead roller so can't see why that should be a problem. Is your motor an induction type or a universal? you could still use a speed controller if it is a universal type with brushes.

finally got on with it....

Made a basic chainguard from some 20G steel sheet; having a finger caught in that chain drive would spoil your whole day.

Then just needed to take it to bits, paint it, and put it back together again.

I built the speed controller into the adaptable box, I was going to change the rather flimsy knob setup for something chunkier, but as it's a rather strange tandem Pot I just put simple guard on it that will hopefully allow it to live with the usual workshop rough and tumble.
