First things is to strip it down and see what's what, race bikes tend to have a few rather agricultural modifications, oddball bits etc.
That's actually a 'factory' made Dresda or Davida, it depends who you ask. Oddly the engineering of the eccentric adjusters is really well thought out and executed. The spindle is keyed to the adjusters and they're machined with a lip to keep the distance between them spot on. However, original or not, that's going as it is truly hideous.View attachment 423954
Yes, someone's stuck that ugly box tubing on under the swingarm, chop that lot off and it'll look much better
Your bike so you do what you see fit but I would probably be keeping it as a reminder of period 'performance' parts, a deep brace swinging arm was on every late 80's early 90's Performance Bike modifications list. That's actually a 'factory' made Dresda or Davida, it depends who you ask. Basically I'm keeping the frame and tank as a starting point.
It'll have a deep brace arm, just not that one. JMC/Metmachex are in keeping, period items so will look right in that respect, but they also look decent and have enough room to get some decent rubber in too. I've managed to get hold of another rarity for it which will need that extra space in the form of a pair of Saxon wheels.Your bike so you do what you see fit but I would probably be keeping it as a reminder of period 'performance' parts, a deep brace swinging arm was on every late 80's early 90's Performance Bike modifications list.
Agree about the JMC or Metmachechex, I would have loved one on my ZX1100A2 back in the day.t'll have a deep brace arm, just not that one. From the little I've found so far there were 9 of these frames built, a couple of Yamaha and the rest for CB900 and GS1000. Dave Degens built them in the 1970s on the back of his racing success mixing it up with the likes of Mike Hailwood in the nationals, and also on the success of his Triton builds.
Just got to pick it up and wait for the buyer's remorse to set in.
I didn't pay huge attention to Dresda back in the day, so didn't realise how involved he was with Honda back then until I started reading about it recently.I've got a curious weakness for that Goldwing engined endurance racing prototype that Degens built in maybe 1979/80?
Yeah, the Davida arm was FUBAR. Took it for blasting and powder coat and he rang to say that it looked dodgy once the old paint was blasted off. I trust his judgement so told him to leave it and went for a JMC. When I saw how bad it was it was quite staggering that anyone would create such a bodge on a safety critical high load component.New swinging arm?
You get them block studs changed RIGHT NOW!!Right then, deck height, squish, compression ratio and capacity checking time.
The engine that the block and pistons came from must have been insanely close to the edge. The squish is purely head gasket thickness, by my reckoning that gives me 11.5:1 compression and 1165 cc displacement.
I haven't sorted the cams for it yet, so I need to get on with that so that I know where I'm at with lift and duration.

Nooo, not on this one. Normally aspirated so the stud stretch is required, without it you can get head gasket issues. Pops Yoshimura used stock Suzuki studs for all his race engines, good enough for him, good enough for me.You get them block studs changed RIGHT NOW!!
Oh i apologize i thought it was the turbo build must stop browsing this place half asleep.Nooo, not on this one. The turbo on the other hand will be getting Heavy Duty studs top and bottom.
I fall into that trap quite often, it's even worse on social media.Oh i apologize i thought it was the turbo build must stop browsing this place half asleep.
Oh btw, found a cam chain tensioner blade for that slabby motor you took from here, can post in new year for you.I fall into that trap quite often, it's even worse on social media.
