Its a pump that came from gateros so never occurred that it may be turned up too much. I'm not sure its adjustable however I think I have a smaller pump that I used to aerate home made organic fertilisers when I decided to grow a giant pumpkin with kids a year or so ago or can leak some air somewhere, I shall have a tinker

I had a look in Maplin at that bench power supply and can't justify £90 at the moment so I made a quick modification to the resistor that gives better control under 1.5A. Also aerated the electrolyte using a Blue Peter compressed air setup with a series of 0.015mm holes drilled in a length of nylon tube. The plating comes out bright and even but the passivate is still not taking very well as can be seen on the test piece, wiping a water mark off removed the passivate. I'll try a few more pieces over the next few days.
Modification works ok up to about 1.5A and gives better adjustment but the contact area is too small over that current.

I'm not sure that the clear is taking either, I have tried clear then yellow and the results are the same. Starting to think I did the electrolyte mix wrong and may have added too much deionised water but I have had some really good bright plating. PH is 5.3 @ 25°C, wondering if letting the level evaporate down over a couple of days might reduce the possible excess water. Had slightly better results with the black although it's just a dark brown really. Might bin the electrolyte mix and start from scratch with a new lot next week, didn't realise so much had changed in the plating industry since the late 80's early 90's!

I did with the part above, it was left hanging for an hour with the heat gun trained on it to keep the temperature at 50° as suggested in the guide then left for a day before handling. Some of the successful yellow results have been dried off with the heat gun and left to air dry over a couple of days.
Sorry Matt, missed your post somehow as I'm a slipshod beggar! I had a look at the Maplin 5A bench power supply MrShiney is using and started having a hunt around as I find a lot of Maplin stuff overpriced due to the convenience of walking into a shop. Ended up with a Chinese 30V 10A digital unit for £70 I should have next week. Did some experiments using bulbs as resistors in series and parallel with the wire wound resistor and the results were quite good but a bench power supply will be a lot simpler.

Looking at your post on the other forum, if I could get the black passivate to come out that dark I would be happy! I see the Zinc and Ammonium ratio per litre you are using is different again to the kit I have and other information since found, possibly due to the brighteners used by each manufacturer.

I did get the remaining Ammonium Molybdate from the supplier but unfortunately never got around to doing any more with the plating, its only on hold though and at some stage in the near future I hope resume. If there's any info you want on what I did just give me a shout though.

The kits have changed a bit I see and the websites too, they make it look so easy even the black!
I still have the chemicals and kit sat here with a view to having another go as I found the process satisfying but also frustrating. Avoid the black as that drove me mad and the best I ever had was dark brown although one of the first test pieces has been used outside since then and still looks good. The green was fantastic, by far the best and easiest passivate.
I started with a Classic Plating kit then bought chemicals from Gateros. The Classic Plating kit resistor worked to a certain extent but soon gave way to a power supply with voltage and current display which made life so much easier than a pair of mutley meters.
Tubs with lids and a PH meter off Ebay, glass tube tank heaters from aquatic stores, chemicals from Gateros would be my suggestion of you want to do it yourself but good preparation and a tank full at a reputable platers might be easier unless they loose a bit!

hope am not too late to this thread but I'm having perfectly acceptable results on some spokes 47 yr old spokes I have with a Barvic zinc-plating kit I got from FROST years ago.
Anyway I'm getting adventurous and wanted to do the nipples in yellow passivate so bought the chemicals for that from Gateros but there's no mixing instructions with them.
There's a small A bottle and bigger B bottle (or vice versa). Do I just add it all to 9L of water?
