12V compressor

ok, I am after a 12V compressor to run on my 4x4 for on board air the plan is to use a old gas cylinder or fire extinguisher as a tank.

But what is out there in terms of 12V compressors that would be up for the job.

Hey, the shop that's building my 4x4 chassis recommended the T-Max or Bush Ranger compressors. I think these are tyre compressors but are being widely used for running diff locks and transfer box actuators because they're cheaper than branded compressors.

I know it is not going to run windy guns but air for inflating tyres and using a nail gun in fields so not massive amounts of air

I bought two from the states for running air suspension for these stupid dancing cars, to use on rally service barges and they where cheap and good , rac patrols used to have similar on their vans, but both got nicked, well happy about that!

question do they sell a body mountable PCL female QR fitting?

Google 1/4 BSP bulkhead ftting, you could then use a braket to mount it and fit a PCL fitting

if you're doing other work too.... why not use an aircon compressor ?

some need to be fiddled with, some can be used straight away (not sure which, but google will tell you straight away)

12v clutch built into the pulley so easy on/off at pressure, plus loads of pressure and flow if you ever need a bit more kick :-)

i had thought about a ac pump but that would be driven by the engine would only require me to get a ac pump and braccket from a different model, but I dont really want it being driven by the already weak engine

thing is, it'll only pull any power from the engine when you have the magnetic clutch engaged (so when you're using air)

and for the same amount of air, it'll put the same strain on the engine as the electric one does (because electric one will just load up alternator)

The Viair are very good, just chose one with a 100% duty cycle, if you're thinking of making your own tank.....make sure it can handle 150psi minimum.

food for thought I think I will go electric route though with the compressor mounted in the tub and the tank under the truck

seems to work out cheaper to purchase the whole vaire kit to be honest. I may add another tank in to the eguation though I have a nice old ali co2 fire extinguisher if it can handle 150psi

well after doing some reading I think I might have to get to the breakers yard and get myself a AC compressor I may have to change a pulley to drive it but the mounting points should be there ready to go. Watch this space for wiring questions!

how does one lubricate the AC compressor? because once the system is open the gas and oil will be lost will it not?

I don't know which ones are best off the top of my head, but when I was going to do the same thing I read up on a lot of people doing the exact same thing and they were happily running them for a long time with no problems


you need the compressor and the first bit of pipework from it, fresh air goes into the in port, compressed air comes out of the out port

you can fit some kind of oiler to the in port if you want.. I think I remember a guy who had one sucking air through a little pot filled with oil, so the incoming oil bubbled through it.... you only need a tiny tiny bit of oil in the airflow

the oil in the gas isn't the main pump lubrication, that's separate

normal fridge compressors the compressor housing holds the oil and the gas, so they tend to mix.... automotive compressors don;t use that system because too much oil would be sucked in as you're bouncing along the road
