Thanks thats quite a statement, I just do the best i can and try and stay in my budget. These things have a habit of running away if your not careful.

Thanks mate, unfortunately i'm not set up for painting other peoples stuff but i have metalflake in many colours and can supply you with whatever colour you need, Its not as difficult a job as some make it out to be.

I'm pleased to see that you are not using the ubiquitous 350 Chevy in it, which is a credit to you! having said that, there are better motors out there, one of which is in my car....

Havn't used a chevy for years Joe, The lumps i use are 394 Olds, 401 Nailheads, 354 & 392 Hemi's and the odd Pontiac.

It is a Mopar, not a Hemi, but an RB. You have possibly seen this before, but there is enough engine to make a 4000lb plus car do this....
The speedo does show mph, and was calibrated two months previous to this being recorded without any tricks.
Maybe restorers and rodders share a common ground after all!

413 ??? yep good motors, i've had a few mopars myself but mostly 383's and 360's, good torquey motors.
The caddy is a very underated engine, its not designed to rev from the factory but it don't take much to get a lot of cheap hp from them, the are torque monsters. the only remaining stock parts in mine are the high nickel block and the super strong crank.
I have a friend in the states with a very similair engine to mine in a similair weight car and he is running 9.2 quarters

I think you may of missed this bit of text.
"Firstly i had the covers media blasted and then chromed, only the highlighted area's were polished.
Then i lightly scuffed the chrome up where they would be painted.
Then 2 coats of Epoxy primer were sprayed on and allowed to flash off for 10mins, then i carefully used a thinners rag to wipe away the primer from the highlighted area's and allowed the epoxy to dry.
Then i sprayed on the copper base colour and again wiped off the highlighted area's and allowed the base coats to dry for 30mins (basecoat dries quick)
Then 2 coats of copper flake were applied and again the highlighted area's were wiped with a clean thinners rag.
Finally 3 clearcoats went on with again the highlights wiped between each coat. It takes a while but i think the time invested is worth the results"

Lovely work, I like the finish on the valve covers but I'm missing something
You said you chromed them, blasted, epoxy, then I presume flake and lacquer.
How did you do the chrome highlights?

Yes it won't stick to chrome on its own, the epoxy primer will though.

Finally decided what to do with the brake backplates so i polished the outside rim and got my mate to chrome them, I will flake the centre bit, I think it will look better than a mass of chrome and give a bit of contrast.
The other night i had a few hours spare so decided to pull the Tropic Aire heater apart that i had picked up at a swap in the states. First job was to take it apart for modifying and then off for media blasting.
These things had massive fan motors in them so i chopped off the motor mount as i will be using a 6" fan/motor from a Gileera motorbike thats nice and slim and will reduce the heater thickness by half. I polished various bits and sent them to my mate for chroming.
The body after blasting was primed with 2 coats of black epoxy primer and will be painted flake later with various other small bits. tabs were made up to held the motor assembly and the long tubes on the matrix cut down to a shorter length. removing the rear section also removed the support that held the matrix tubes so 2 small tabs were made and fitted with a grommet to support the tubes and were bolted to the heater body.
Chopping the tubes down meant losing the small beaded ends which stop the hose from blowing off so as i couldn't find my small beader roller i spun up a couple of brass rings on the lathe and soldered them in place.

They should therefore still be classed as historic vehicles and not be forced the ignominy, the sheer bare faced affrontery of having to wear a Q plate.

Yes John they will be seen, thanks for the positives, the front of the car is open wheeled.
Personally even if parts can't be seen i still like to do the best job possible for my own peace of mind.
Don't get me started on the BIVA thing. However during the course of my day i come into contact with many poorly built cars that really shouldn't be on the road so it does make you think.

You Hot- rodders need to get organised!
The Federation of British Historic Vehicle clubs lobbies government and the EU on behalf of the classic car movement in the UK.
You guys need a simmilar organisation to stand up for the rights of Hot- rodders and classic car modifiers! After all you guys are also part of our motoring heritage and history so your work needs to be recognised and protected and supported just as the historic original classic cars are by the FBHVC.
Something like the NHRA that they have in the US!
