I wouldn't have thought these will be viable long term. Heat and oil are certain to cause them to detach.

It's a test, we'll see how long it lasts. The glue is very strong though when I put it on a degreased surface. It depends on how much oil gets at it and how the oil reacts with the glue once it's already set. Heat shouldn't be an issue there.

Did the machine ever come with a plug/stopper/bung/protective cover for the horizontal spindle? If not, maybe that would be a good project.

No I can't recall having seen such a thing. What it does lack is a cover on the top to protect the vertical spindle, but I don't think anyone gave much thought to the horizontal one.
