What minimum power does it need to have, i was thinking of using the Aldi compressor that is very small without a receiver. Would be for small jobs though.
Fully agree, but for a diyer like myself who is painting once in a blue moon then the costs of the air fed setup compared to the cartridges is prohibitive.
Its up to the diyer to ensure that the fitment of his cartridge mask is perfect which i fully intend to do. The cartridge mask if used correctly should give the same level of safety compared to the air fed. Its just that the air fed is idiot proof as chipper says. Thats my take on what has been said so far.
If i was painting with 2k constantly then i would be plumping for the air fed mask all the time. For a pro its really a no brainer.

Absolutely on the same page Steve. At the time, i had a large single phase unit which was not able to provide the 21cfm free air required for gun and mask on one line. I had therefore to get a big 3phase unit. My point was, given the price, the availability of 3ph power in your home garage and size of unit (bearing in mind it needs to be well away from the spray area) this is not really suitable for an occasional diy jobber.

No it doesnt but at the time, (bearing in mind im old!) there was not a single phase unit that would supply enough air. To be honest, even now, given you could run 2x 3hp compressors and trail 2 air lines about with you which on a full respray would be a right pain in it, a 3hp unit would probably struggle to keep up with the air fed and may over heat. I will add im a painter not a compressor expert though.

Ive got a few years under my belt myself norsa, ain't getting old great, well better than being dead anyways. Remember the days when all you needed was a 14cfm and around a 150 ltr tank to run your JGA, that will definitely not be enough nowadays especially with the mask requirements, thats why I have two running direct to one air line, don't think I could cope with two air lines they would only get tangled up in my zimmer frame or something when you least expect it

Would the aldi compressor be good enough for my use ?
I wouldn't like to say it would or wouldn't as I have not tried it myself, I know it wouldn't be good enough for my needs, but yours might be different. I think Chipper tried it and found it lacking if i remember correctly.

Old is only good when accompanied with wisdom mate
Do you couple them with a tee/y piece like on the belt of the air fed or do you get technical with one way valves etc?

Yep I got a second 3hp as I'm single-phase. Made a junction effort out of bent tube, a 2-1 thing, can also run them singly through to the paint garage. Means one line to the belt, I tried two separate, it was a right pain.
Said the other day, the Aldi comp won't cut it, tried it with her indoorses one. Running lower pressures that I was really comfy with, it ran constantly - duty cycle well exceeded, v.hot/wet air. Not up to it i'm afraid.

8 bar, it would only be used for air fed. Its small which is perfect for where ill be using it for the fresh air. Its going to go through the small square back window, with a home made window fixed plate/blocker, then pipe going through that all sealed up. Then i'll use 2 fans to blow the fumes out the front garage door.

The air output Norsa refers to is measured in cfm not bar which is what you will need to know for an air fed

If that helps the discussion the aldi/lidl comp are 270l/min, 9.5CFM, Air displacement.
I think it might be short for an air fed mask, as it will be about 6CFM air free delivery (rule of thumb 2/3 of air displacement).
I have one of them as a secondary one just to help with air tool. I don't have a air fed mask so I would be able to tell you more I am afraid.

I used to spray paint as a job, reading the health and safety can put you off abit...
We had signs outside the booths saying "isocynates can cause asthma"
We used to get tests every 6 months, hearing, breathing, lung capacity and urine tests.
I only worked there 2.5 - 3 years but glad im away from it all now as you can feel it reducing your lifespan, not just spraying but all the dust and fumes from other stuff... I still go there when Im passing to see them all at work and its strange... You dont notice how bad it is when you work there as you are used to it but leave for a few months and go back and its bad.. Dust floating everywhere, fumes, the smell of thinners etc etc
Overall Im Glad Im not there anymore just for the possible health risks... Health is worth more than making money
