I will let you into a secret. For many Brands the 7016 and 7018 are the same rod especially on 2.5mm or smaller, often the 3.2mm will be different but some even they are the same. They only change at 4mm and bigger. The small diameters if you stuck to the true definition of a 7016 they weld awfully.....7015s often are true and they dont perform well at all.
I'm not so sure about that.
I have several 7016 and 7018 rods in 2mm,2.5mm and 3.2mm and they are quite different.
The 7016 rods have a shiny black glasslike slag and the 7018 a dull brown slag. Exceptions are the Bohler Fox EV 50-W and the Esab OK53.05 which are both 7016 but have the same dull brown slag as the 7018 rods.
Most of my 7018 rods don't like DCEN. They weld weird and sound completly different then on DCEP. Exception is the Lincoln Smitweld Conarc 49c which runs well on either polarity. My other 7018 (Weldkar and Lincoln Smitweld 48) are DC+ only.
My 7016 rods (Lastek, Esab, Bohler) all do well on both polarities. I'd say there is definitely difference in the flux coating.
