7018 rods

Tried 7018 today,nice weld the only thing I found is the flux tends to cover the rod after a weld.After every weld .Gone back to the good old 6013 rod

Normal procedure when re-starting is to snap the end off with your fingers.

Breaking the flux of at end of the rod always tears the leather on my glove. After a couple of times there's a hole in the glove and I burn my thumb. I have a dedicated old file to scrape them on, or just tap them on the concrete if I'm lying on my back under something.

I think last time I used 7018, I ended up with a bit of a rough concrete slab for giving the rod end a clean, if I was having to re-light a rod.
I found a file didn't really dig into the flux that well, whereas a few rubs over a bit rough concrete removed it with much less effort.

I think last time I used 7018, I ended up with a bit of a rough concrete slab for giving the rod end a clean, if I was having to re-light a rod.
I found a file didn't really dig into the flux that well, whereas a few rubs over a bit rough concrete removed it with much less effort.

If I'm using 7018's I have a bit of wood with some coarse emery cloth glued to it. Press the end of the rod into the sandpaper & give it a few twists, cleans the rod tip without breaking off too much flux like a file does.

Maybe repair the thumb end by gluing something on there that would hold up better.

I use a small cheap around £14 I think bench grinder had it for years and I just leave it running. The fine wheel cleans the rod end without breaking flux off.

I knock the end off on concrete, it's dead easy and quick.

we never ever re started an elctrode no need to risk any unnecesary pores
only time maybe,on structural when you had totaly run out and you needed half a rod vs a 1/2 hr treck then any old rod would do

E7018 is ok to use in cold weather, but it is important to re-dry them before using, extra moisture in the coating will bring porosity.
The weld metal of E7018 has very good mechanical properties, low temperature (-30 degrees) V-Noch impact value can be about 150J.
This means the weld joint can be very strong in -30 degrees environment.

I don't do a lot of stick, the 2.5 7018’s I use state 60 -80 amps I'm never over 80 amps with them, 75-80 seems to be the sweet spot for me with what I do.
