Hi,

don't you use the back of your hand as the 'static' or magnetic flux around the cable can make the hairs on your hand stand up or 'twitch'?

You can feel the current without touching the wire.

You get a similar effect when testing if a TV screen is powered up.

I find my eyes are the best indicator of that Peter, bright colours and moving things means the TV is on

(Only joking of course, I know exactly what you mean )
(Oh and that only works on CRTs I think, it certainly doesn't work on my LCD as I've just tried it )

I seem to remember from very rusty GCSE Physics that the reason you get 'static' on the front of a CRT is because the glass becomes negatively charged due to all the electrons it is bombarded with.

yes, we did some TV repairs a while back in the BT workshop when it was quiet...

it paid for our Christmas dinner and anyway one of our guys was into that sort of thing.

Anyhow, over a year or two we had a fair few sets that powered up but the screen stayed blank. It was his way of testing if there was power on the screen (I recall he called it a 'raster', or something).

If you got a slight crackling sound and felt the hairs move then the screen was OK and the lack of any 'glow' was due to no signal, or guns not running, etc.

Later, when working somewhere else, in a factory possibly, and meeting up with leckys I reckon they said you can feel if a HV cable is powered by the same method.

All a long time ago, I may have mis-remembered it.

my dad is a sparky and when i got into welding he said, "son, your working on the wrong end of electricity", still dont know what he meant! the empty cans of strongbow might have had something to do with it though??
